DETAILED RESULTS 2015
GC Division 3 Doubles, 23rd - 24th February 2015
The CNSW GC Division 3 competitions were held at Toronto Croquet Club. Toronto CC has 4 well maintained lawns - a tribute to the hard working groundspeople.
Eight teams entered the doubles, 3 from EDSACC including defending titleholders John Aldridge & Bryan Clarke, 2 from Maitland and one each from Toronto, Port Hacking and Branxton. A single round robin was played with each team playing 7 matches over 2 days.
The final result hinged on the final match between Lynda Toms & Lorraine Hatfield(Port Hacking) and Cheryl Patterson & Hazel Gibbons(EDSACC). At the 12th hoop with EDSACC leading 6/5 an apparently successful EDSACC jump shot moved the jawed ball. After much perusal by both the referee and the TR the ball was declared through making the score 6 all. Port made good use of their first ball to 13 and used this ball to score the hoop. Port girls up 7/6.
This meant that both teams had 6 wins from 7 games and both had 21 net hoops - that is as close as it gets. The competition was thus awarded to the winner of the match between the two teams thus making Lynda and Lorraine champions with Cheryl & Hazel runners-up. Congratulations to all players for a most entertaining 2 days.

GC Division 3 Singles, 25th - 27th February 2015
There were 8 entrants in the CNSW Golf Croquet Division 3 singles. From Toronto were Bruce Glasgow, Margaret Pedemont and Kevin Davies, John Butler and Suzy Parfait EDSACC, Lynda Toms & Lorraine Hatfield (Port Hacking), and Lisa Kelshaw (Manly). A double round robin was played meaning all played 14 games over 3 days. All players won at least 2 matches. Of the 8 players there were 7 handicap changes.
At the completion of round 1 Margaret led with 6 wins followed by Lynda & Lorraine on 5 wins with Bruce & Suzy with 4 wins. After round 11 Margaret with 10 wins maintained a 2 game buffer from fast finishing Bruce and consistent Lynda. During round 12 with Margaret playing Lynda the heavens opened up causing a short break until the rain eased. Margaret found the heavier lawn a struggle losing to both Lynda and then Bruce. Going into round 14 both Margaret and Bruce had 10 wins but Bruce had a healthy lead on net hoops. Both won their last round making Bruce the Champion and Margaret the runner-up.
Thanks to the Toronto CC and its members for allowing CNSW the use of their lawns for the week. A SPECIAL THANKS to the groundspeople, kitchen hands and Bill Munns and his extensive contingent of referees without whom the Tournament would not have been as successful.

GC Division 2 Doubles, 2nd - 3rd March 2015
This tournament was held in Taree with the doubles on Monday & Tuesday 2nd & 3rd March and the singles on Wednesday to Friday 4th to 6th March. Clubs from Wollongong to Port Macquarie were represented.
Practice on the hot, humid Sunday afternoon was followed by a severe thunderstorm with 80km/h winds and 50mm rain, causing havoc with falling trees, one narrowly missing a player’s caravan.
However, Monday dawned cooler and overcast, but despite damp grounds the tournament began on schedule. There were only 5 pairs in the doubles event, so a double round robin was played. Taree Croquet Club decided to use 2 of their 3 courts so that games would be single banked, enabling each game, which were untimed, to proceed without interruption.
During the three rounds held during the morning session, all score were close. But larger differences in score occurred in all games during the two afternoon rounds.
On Tuesday, the heat and humidity began to return. Though the games were a repeat of Monday, the results in many were the opposite. The leaders from Monday failed to win a game on Tuesday.
The winners won 5 of their 8 games, while the next three pairs each won 4 games.
Robyn Compton retained her position amongst the place getters in this event, but with a different partner to earlier years.
On Wednesday, eight players from the Doubles Competition were joined by five others for the Singles Competition. These 13 played a round robin over 3 days to decide the winner. These games were untimed but double banked.
Three rounds were played in the morning session followed by a lunch break. The 2 afternoon sessions were held during probably the hottest and most humid time of the week.
Thursday was a carbon copy of Wednesday. A highlight occurring during the first afternoon session when the 2 leading players, each having 7 wins from 7 games, met. The result, in a very short game, was an unexpected 7 - 0.
Friday was rather relaxed with only 3 rounds to be played and the weather much more pleasant.
While first place was clear cut - Bill Strick having won all his 12 games, second place was only determined during the last round when Wal Wallington achieved his 9th win.
CNSW President, Tony McArthur, who played in both the doubles and singles events, presented the trophies at the conclusion of each event.
The management committee thank all the referees, many of whom travelled to Taree just to referee, Taree green keeper, Phill Sage and Taree members who set up the courts or worked in the kitchen each day. Also, thanks go to the Taree members who provided the slices, biscuits, muffins etc, which with tea and coffee, are available free of charge during all Taree Carnivals.
The results were:
Doubles winner: Robyn Compton (Maitland) and Bill Strick (Taree); runner up: Shirley Page (Toronto) and Marie Munns (Toronto)
Singles winner: Bill Strick (Taree); runner up: Wal Wallington (Forster)

GC Championships - Womens Singles, 11th - 12th April 2015
The CNSW Golf Croquet Womens Singles were held 11,12 April at Headquarters.
Unfortunately, with some of the usual combatants being absent - unavailability due to illness, working, competing elsewhere etc, the field was reduced to 6 players.
However, these players represented the whole spectrum handicap-wise - and - they all enjoyed the challenge of the double round robin format and were very keen to maintain or improve their results in the second round.
The winner, on wins and then net hoops, was Alison Sharpe (Killara) from Brenda Wild (Mt Sugarloaf). Third and fourth positions were also decided by net hoops - another close tussle.
Two of the players changed handicaps - heading in the right direction - with Alison Sharpe becoming a 0 (zero).
Thanks very much to everyone for their spirit and cooperation.
Special thanks to our referees- Wendy Fothergill (TM), Lynda Toms, Lorraine Hatfield, Stephen Howes and John Compton. The players appreciated having you on the lawn with them.
A good weekend’s event!

GC Division 1 Pennants, 26th - 29th May 2015
Under glorious sunny skies our six (6) teams - Killara, Nowra, Maitland, Cammeray, Sydney and Sutherland - competed for the 2015 title over 3 ½ days of play.
As expected, competition was fierce, games were challenging and play was interesting as were the match results. Several players experienced their first foray into Division 1 Pennants and are keen to be part of the 2016 competition. Two players moved up the ladder with regard to handicap - Jack Cohen and Peter Montague. Well done and congratulations!
Special thanks were expressed by the players for a very positive croquet carnival and especially to our team of volunteer referees (Bev Smith, Ingrid Cohen, Wendy Fothergill, Lynda Toms, Lorraine Hatfield, Peter Smith, John Compton and myself). The players appreciate having keen, interested referees to oversee their matches.
At 5pm on Thursday 28 May, when play stopped, the final positions were decided. Two teams had 4 wins but on both Total and Nett matches, games and hoops the Winners for 2015 were the foursome from Maitland with Killara taking second place.
Maitland has now been victorious each year from 2008, apart from 2014 where they were Runner Up to Canberra.
Congratulations to all teams! CNSW hopes you will be ready and willing to compete in 2016.

GC Division 2 Pennants, 11th June 2015
Twelve (12) Division 2 GC Teams took on the challenge of Golf Croquet Pennants for 2015. There were three (3) geographical regions - Northern, Metropolitan and Southern. After all the lead up matches had been played the three teams to contest the Finals Series were Maitland, Mosman and Nowra. The fourth team brought into the contest was Sutherland, as both Nowra and Sutherland had won equal number of matches in a tight contest.
So, on Thursday 11 June, the four teams went into the draw for Semi Final positions. The Semi Finals were: Nowra vs Maitland, and Sutherland vs Mosman.
The Nowra team (Pat Poynter, Phil Pickard, David Turvey and Wayne Worrall) played against Maitland (Ron King, Rob Armstrong, Rod Dillon and Cathy Hurst). Maitland won 2 Matches to 1; 4 Games all; 46 Hoops to 45. In the other match the Sutherland team (Marie McMullen, Lorraine Hatfield, John Cole and Lynda Toms) played against the Mosman team ( Lyn Day, Rob Wright, Michael Morton-Evans and Richard Westgarth). Mosman won 2 Matches to 1; 4 Games to 3; 34 Hoops to 36.
The Final between Maitland and Mosman - using their same teams - went to the wire, with the Doubles match determining the Winning team. The Winners were Maitland (2 Matches to 1; 4 Games to 3; 39 Hoops each).
A very interesting day’s play was enjoyed by all, including the spectators who stayed for the whole afternoon’s play. Thanks go to the Referees - Bev Smith, Wendy Fothergill, Margaret Sawers, Peter Smith, john Compton and Robyn Compton. Your work and involvement is always appreciated.
Congratulations Maitland on your win!! Commiserations to Mosman, Nowra and Sutherland. Thanks for playing so well in the Rounds and especially in the Finals Series.
Obviously, CNSW hope all teams will be back in 2016.

GC ACA Bronze Medal, 12th - 14th June 2015
This event was played at Tempe from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 June, and was played as a double round robin in a single block of 10 players. Each player won at least 5 games, and each player lost at least 5 games, in a competition which produced several upsets.
With one round left to play, Peter Landrebe and John Levick had each had 12 wins from their 17 games, while Peter Smith (11 wins) was about to play Steve Harden (9 wins). Peter Landrebe went away to a 6-2 lead over John, but John stuck to his guns to emerge a 7-6 victor, and to earn the right to represent NSW in the ACA Gold Medal events in Launceston in September.
Thanks to Bev Smith (Tournament Referee) and Wendy Fothergill for a sterling effort refereeing 90 games over the three days.

GC Division 3 Pennants, 18th June 2015
This year for Division 3 Golf Croquet Pennants 20 teams entered for the competition - although due to unforeseen problems two teams had to pull out. Once again there were three (3) geographical regions - Southern, Metropolitan and Northern.
After the Match rounds the three teams heading to the Finals Series were Nowra Red, Mosman Blue and Maitland. They were joined by Mosman White who were equal on wins with their Mosman Blue counterparts.
The Finals Series was held on Thursday 18 June where the weather was fine until the last games of the Final where both the players and referees headed off to don their wet weather gear.
In the Semi Finals: Nowra Red defeated Mosman White ( 2 Matches to 0, 5 Games to 2, 41 Hoops to 34), whilst in the other Mosman Blue defeated Maitland (2 Matches to 1, 4 Games all, 44 Hoops to 43).
After a short lunchbreak, the Final was played between Nowra Red ( Fay Marks, Val Pickard, Keith Poynter and Ann Worrall) and Mosman Blue (David Snedden, Ray Barratt, Tim Stafford and John Owen). The Winners were Nowra Red (2 Matches to 0, 5 Games to 1; 39 Hoops to 29). The other Match was 1 Game Each, 1 Hoop Each, when the heavy rain hit, and, given that the result had already been determined, we stopped play.
Congratulations to all Division 3 teams for the way in which they played the Rounds, the Semi Finals and the Final. Congratulations go, once again, to Nowra Red and also to Mosman Blue.
Thanks again to the Referees - Bev Smith, Margaret Sawers, Peter Smith, John Compton and Robyn Compton. Another successful day’s effort at Croquet NSW Headquarters.
Best wishes to all Clubs and we hope you will be back in 2016.

AC Championships - Womens Open Singles, 19th - 21st June 2015
This tournament was played at Tempe between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 June. The date was changed from the originally scheduled dates of 20-22 June to accommodate entries from two Victorian players, and to allow Alison Sharpe to take part before departing for England to play in the WCF Women’s World Championship. Unfortunately the change of date meant that Barb Piggott was unable to play because of commitments to a carnival in Urunga.
It is disappointing that only two NSW women were prepared to take part. However, there is quite a gulf between the top 4 women in NSW and the next group of players, and one can understand that there is a limit to how many times this next group of players want to be as lambs to the slaughter.
With only four players, all of whom were playing in the Women’s World Championship on July, the competition was structured as a double round robin, to be followed by a best-of-3 final and a best-of-3 playoff for 3rd place. The aim was to give all four players some experience of best-of-3 play, the format which would apply throughout the World Championship.
However, this plan was foiled when the finalists decided (one had a bad cold, and the day was freezing) to play a single game final, and the other two players decided that they didn’t want to play a 3rd place playoff at all! So much for trying to create a format which gives players plenty of games and appropriate preparation for a bigger event.
Alison Sharpe, having been undefeated in her 6 round robin games, was defeated in the final by Rosemary Landrebe, 26-5.

GC Championships - Open Doubles, 26th - 27th June 2015
Held at CNSW Headquarters.
Whilst the number of Doubles pairs was disappointing - their enthusiasm, commitment and desire to do well wasn’t. They were all ready to challenge for Doubles supremacy. Initially the date for this event was timetabled to allow practice for the GC Interstate Team, ready for September in Tasmania. But, for a few different reasons, this did not happen.
But, back to the Magnificent Five. After two days in a Double Round Robin format the final results were close. All pairs enjoyed the challenge of the Double Round Robin where, in our format, in the second round, the winners of the toss on Day 1 were deemed to have lost the toss on Day 2. It was also interesting to analyse the effect of having a bye, especially a long bye, on their next round of play.
Thanks to the Referees over the two days - Bev Smith, Wendy Fothergill and Ingrid Cohen. Your dedication is appreciated by all.
The results were entered on Croquetscores and also on the CNSW Website - for our archives.
The Winners were the Maitland team, John Compton and Peter Smith - with 7 wins out of 8 matches, with the ever-improving Sydney team of Goffredo Giacomini and Jack Cohen in hot pursuit with 6 wins.
Congratulations to all players. CNSW appreciates your interest in CNSW GC Events. Maybe next year there will be more teams entered in the event.

AC Pennants, Finals 24th - 30th July 2015
Association Pennants competitions were held in Bronze, Silver, Gold and Premier divisions, with almost all teams representing metropolitan clubs. Maitland entered teams in the Silver and Gold divisions, and was the driving force behind a Hunter Region team in the Premier division.
Bronze
Six teams entered the Bronze competition, two teans from Cammeray and one each from Chatswood, Killara, Mosman and Strathfield. The competition was very close, with four teams winning three matches and losing two. Strathfield emerged victorious with 10 games on, just ahead of Cammeray’s second team with 9 wins. Cammeray’s first team, with 8 wins, are still feeling the pain of having lost 3-0 to Cammeray 2 in the first round.
Silver
Six teams entered the Silver competition, from Cammeray, Chatswood, Maitland, Manly and Mosman. Unfortunately, Maitland withdrew their team after the draw was done, not wanting to travel to Sydney three times. Strathfield withdrew their team after two rounds had been played because they found they could no longer field a team. The competition was then restructured as a double round robin, with Mosman emerging as the winner winning four matches and losing two. Cammeray and Manly each had three wins and three losses, with Manly finishing as runners-up with 11 games won.
Gold
Only two teams entered the Gold division, Cammeray and Maitland. It was decided that two matches would be played, one at Maitland and one at Cammeray, and that a final would be held if the two teams were equal on matches won and games won. Cammeray travelled to Maitland and were beaten three games to nil, after which Maitland travelled to Cammeray, where Cammeray returned the favour, winning 3-0. The stage was set for a final, which got under way at Tempe on Thursday 16 July. After about 30 minutes play the heavens opened accompanied bu thunder and lightning. We took shelter in the clubhouse and watched the lawns flood. It was clear that lawn 1 was not going to be playable for some time, so the games were pegged down to be resumed on Tuesday 11 August. Attempts to play a third match were thwarted first by an electrical storm at Tempe, then by the continuing ill-health of Peter Smith, so the winner was decided on net hoops, as set out in the regulations.
Premier
The Premier division plays a different format to the other divisions, with two games of doubles followed by 8 games of singles. A Hunter Region team was formed with one player from each of Maitland, Newcastle National Park, Royal Sydney Golf Club and Tamworth - a liberal interpretation of Hunter Region! They played a strong Cammeray team, who ran out winners by 7 games to 3.
Results of all divisions are shown below:

GC Division 1 Singles and Doubles, 15th - 19th August 2015
Perfect weather in Nowra, along with superb Club hospitality, provided the right start, middle and finish to the CNSW GC Division 1 Doubles and Singles Events.
Sincere thanks go to Nowra Croquet Club for offering to host these two events from Saturday 15th to Wednesday 19th August, and for their expertise in doing so, also to the Referees whose work is always appreciated. Special thanks go to Ann Worrall (computer data entry whiz) and David Turvey (TM for the Singles).
In the Doubles, 11 pairs representing Nowra, Canberra, Maitland, Port Macquarie, Taree, Sutherland, Forster and Toronto, took up the challenge in a big way. After two days of solid competition, with 18 matches having a 7/6 result and 17 matches having a 7/5 result (out of the 55 matches played), there were three (3) teams who had each won 7 of their 10 matches. Coming in third was the Nowra pairing of Wayne Worrall and David Turvey. The runners up were Peter Smith and John Compton (Maitland), with the winners, by 1 nett hoop, being Peter Coles (Forster) and Bill Munns (Toronto). A great result after such highly competitive matches.
The Singles ( held on Monday and Tuesday, with the Finals Series on Wednesday) was played in 2 Blocks each with 8 players, representing Canberra, Sutherland, Sydney, Toronto, Port Macquarie, Forster, Taree and Nowra Clubs. Again 33 of the 56 games were 7/6 or 7/5. From Block A the Semifinalists were Peter Freer (Canberra) and Peter Coles (Forster), whilst from Block B the Semifinalists were John Deeves (Nowra) and Joe Dimech (Taree). The Final Series was a Best of Three format - but none of the matches needed the third game. Peter Freer (Canberra) defeated Joe Dimech (Taree), whilst Peter Coles (Forster) defeated John Deeves (Nowra) in the Semifinals... with identical scores 7/6, 7/4. The Final ended as a win for Peter Freer 7/5, 7/3 over Peter Coles.
Congratulations to all players in both events... and especially to the Finalists.

Schools Championship, 12th - 13th September 2015
For the ninth year we have run the NSW Schools Championship. This year we had twelve participants including 3 interstate players and 2 players from country NSW.
We had a diverse range of experience ranging from a representative in the under 21 World championships to a participant who had just commenced his croquet career. This was the first state croquet championship for a number of the players, and all players excelled themselves winning their share of games.
Over the 11 rounds we watched some hard fought games, some great hoop running and excellent jump shots, with all competitors enjoying their games and the comraderie amongst the players.
Four of the most experienced players took out the top four places having each won 9 of their 11 matches and they then played in a semi-finals. Lachlan Mula [Deniliquin High] played Charlie Sharpe [Knox Grammar] with Lachlan winning 7:5. Jack Williams [Traralgon College] played Kyle Mula [Deniliquin High] with Jack winning 7:5 The finals were contested with Jack & Lachlan winning hoop for hoop until Lachlan with some excellent shots overcame his opposition to win 7:4.
As manager of this tournament I would like to thank the players for the excellent spirit in which the tournament was played, the referees for supporting those junior players and to the parents/spectators for their enthusiasm and support.
Jacky has asked me to give a special thank you to the 10 referees who gave of their time to support her as tournament referee. It was good for the game and for the participants to always have a referee on each game and to be able to give the referees breaks during the day.
We would finally like to say we would hope that all of the participants today will go on to play in the Australian Inaugural Schools Croquet Championship to be held in November 2015
