DETAILED RESULTS 2011
3 and Under Singles, 5th - 6th March 2011
This tournament was run at Tempe over the weekend with 13 players in a modified swiss of 7 rounds. The weather was early autumn, with changeable but comfortable conditions (ca 23 deg). The 3 renovated lawns were running around 9 to 10 seconds, and the hoops were set at 3 11/16ths inch in undemanding soil. The rules of engagement stated that after 6 of the 7 rounds the 2 players with the best win percentage would play the Final, with the remaining competitors completing their last match (but no longer able to affect the results).
The 2 finalists were thus Stephen Richards and manager Tim Murphy. When they played earlier in round 2 Tim had been the winner, but this time Stephen came out on top 26-22 after an exciting see-saw finish (right Tim!?).
Note that the results are not strictly comparable as the number of games played differed due to the byes.
Thanks to Tim and Trevor for giving this format a tryout.

Golf Croquet - Division 2 - Doubles, 28th March 2011
The GC Division 2 doubles was played at beautiful Maitland Park on Monday 28th March under threatening skies. The threat was empty and the prescipitation did not eventuate. Four teams competed in a double round robin competition. Maitland pair John Purnell and Rita Murphy won 5 out of 6 matches to finish on top. They were closely followed by Maitland pair John Pace and Robyn Compton with 4 wins. Branxton’s Anne and Greg Freeman together with Maitland’s Bev Smith and Jacky McDonald made up the other teams. Most games were competitive and all teams played a serious amount of GC in the day.
John Purnell is 86 and only began playing croquet at 81 while John Pace has only been playing for 2 years.
The disappointing aspect of the competition was the lack of entries from both Metropolitan Clubs and Country Clubs. If CNSW competitions are to remain healthy then Clubs as well as individuals must actively support the competitions.

Golf Croquet - Division 2 - Singles, 30th - 31st March 2011
The GC Division 2 was held at the Maitland Lawns on the 30th, 31st March. Eight combatants entered the contest with great enthusiasm playing through heat, wind and rain always with a smile. The competition was run as a double round robin with all players competing over 14 matches in two days. Spectators and officials were appreciative of the high standard of play and the general friendliness of the competition. Eighty-Five years young John Purnell from the Maitland Club surprised his much younger opponents with his consistently skilful play, his tenacity and his endurance to win the singles competition with 10 wins. John, earlier in the week had won the doubles with partner Rita Murphy. John, Jacky McDonald and John Pace (also from Maitland) completed the competition with 10 wins from their 14 games. John Purnell was named winner on countback with net hoop score of +29 followed by Jacky +23 and John Pace +22. Four players had handicap changes with John Pace moving from a 7 to a 5 and at one stage looking at a 4.
Well done all competitors.

NSW Golf Croquet Championships - Womens Open Singles, 2nd - 3rd April 2011
There were six contenders for this event which was held over two days with each match being the best of three games. All contenders enjoyed camaraderie and the excellent croquet. The winner Christine blitzed the field, winning all her matches and only dropping one game 6-7. Ros and Barb battled out 2nd and 3rd place, both being very evenly matched with Ros taking out send place by one game. Lyn earned her nickname of leaping Lyn with her jump shots, which is not unexpected as she was coached in this aspect of the game by jumping Joe. Lorna and Leslie both newcomers to this event showed great technical skill with their long roquets and long hoop shots.
The only casualty to the event was Lyn’s mallet which just broke into two pieces.
Congratulations to all the players for their friendship, sportsmanship and enjoyment of the game of croquet. Thanks also goes to the referees Joe Dimech, Jude Willmore, Carol Hayes & Ingrid Cohen who gave of their time to participate in this event.

Bronze Singles, 4th - 8th April 2011
This tournament was originally scheduled for February at Tempe, but there were insufficient entries. I offered to run the tournament on behalf of Cammeray Croquet Club at Cammeray during the first week of April, playing games mainly at 4 pm and 7 pm. Fifteen entries were received with six entries from Cammeray, three from Manly, two from Strathfield and one each from Epping, Mosman, Sutherland and Sydney. I organised the playing schedule to accommodate the availability of various players (including a couple of last-minute crises).
Players were grouped into three blocks of 5 players, each block playing a round-robin. The block winners and runners-up and the two best third place-getters played quarter-finals on Thursday night, followed by semi-finals and the final on Friday.
The games got under way on Monday afternoon at 4 pm, with fine weather, which changed to light showers during the first games, and to quite heavy showers during the 7 pm games. There were a few more very light showers on Tuesday and Wednesday, but the weather was fine for the rest of the week. We turned the lights on at about 5 pm each night, and all players were happy with the conditions (even though yellow and pink balls look very similar from a distance, and clips are sometimes hard to distinguish).
The general standard of play was very good, with several players making breaks of 5 or more hoops. Sixteen of the 30 round-robin games and all seven final series games were pegged out by the winner. Three players, Roger Liles, Kim Morrison and Michael Strickland, have been playing croquet for less than a year, but all acquitted themselves well. Roger and Kim each finished 3rd in their block, while Michael won his block undefeated, and went on to be runner-up.
As might have been expected, the three block winners (all undefeated in the round-robin) and the strongest runner-up all won their quarter-finals. The semi-final between John Campey and David Surridge was closely fought until towards the end, when David went away to run out 18-9 winner. In the other semi-final, Matt Carden, previously undefeated, ran into an in-form Michael Strickland, who won 18-0. The final between Michael and David was an exciting game to watch, with both players playing attacking croquet with David emerging victorious, 18-9.
Thanks to the referees, Dennis Faggotter, Neil Hardie, Neil Hartley, Stephen Howes, Mike Highes, Barbara McDonald, David Stanton and Alan Walsh; and to the caterers, Pamela Hardie, Bebe Abdullah, Joan Altwasser, Di Loveday, Georgie Ofner and Kerry Phillips

NSW Golf Croquet Championships - Mens Open Singles, 7th - 10th April 2011
This event was played as a single game round robin over 1 ½ days, in which 12 players entered. Eight players then proceeded to the knockout event with all games being the best of 3.
The standard of the competition was excellent with 2/3rds of all games going to 12+ hoops and the final 8 players not being decided until the last game of the round robin. All players made some outstanding shots and some memorable hoops.
The final day of the competition saw the semi- finals and finals played. Mike Jenner defeated John Levick 7-5, 7-4, Martyn Prins defeated Tony Hall 4-7, 7-3, 7-3. The finals between Mike & Martyn was a cliff hanger, the winner not being decided until the 13th hoop of the 5th game. Congratulations to both players for giving us an excellent exhibition of croquet. Mike Jenner defeated Martyn Prins 7-4, 3-7, 4-7, 7-5, 7-6.
I would like to thank the players for their co-operation in the smooth running of the tournament, for their enthusiasm, competitiveness, and mateship. It was a pleasure to manage the tournament. Its nice to see that most players respect their opponents and the etiquette of the game in there dress code of predominantly white, or club colours.
I would also like to thank the players who filled in as referees, both when they were sitting off and when they were playing in opposing games. I would particularly like to thank the country players who stayed in order to referee the quarter finals and to Peter Freer and Ron Johnstone who came to watch the semis & finals and were co-opted into refereeing.
I was disappointed that Sydney referees were unavailable to referee this tournament. The tournament only had 2 referees on Day 1 available and no referees for the rest of the tournament.

NSW Golf Croquet Championships - Open Doubles, 15th - 17th April 2011
The NSW Golf Croquet Doubles were held at Tempe from the 15th to 17th April 2011 inclusive.
Apart from the weather, it rained cats, dogs and little fishes plus a few odd frogs on Saturday which made it unpleasant for the players the other two days were very kind to us as far as the weather was concerned.
The lawns were in good conditions although I did hear the odd complaint about court 1 In particular.
It was disappointing that there were only seven couples playing in what after all is one of the major titles that NSW holds. The games were played in the manner in which croquet should be played.. i.e. with courtesy and good sportsmanship. Roz Johnstone and Pam Gentle were on the receiving end of some of this sportsmanship whilst playing John Levick and Ron Johnstone. Ros inadvertently ran a hoop which had just been scored and was allowed to have the shot again. It didn’t alter the fact that it delayed the inevitable but it was a nice gesture just the same.
I would also like to thank the referees who as usual did a great job. They are without a doubt the unsung heroes of our tournaments . Particular thanks must go to Jacky McDonald ,Wendy Fothergill and Kath Coull for giving up their time.
The winners were John Levick and Ron Johnstone
Runners up Martyn Prins Steve Thornton
Once again thank you to all those who participated.

NSW Golf Croquet Championships - Open Singles, 29th April - 2nd May 2011
The GC Open Singles was held at Tempe from Friday 29th April to Monday 2nd May. There were only fourteen competitors, five from the metropolitan area and nine from the country. Maitland had the largest club representation with six players. It is a shame that with the large numbers playing golf croquet there were not more entries for this prestigious event.
I organised referees to come each day and I cannot thank these people enough. On the Friday Margaret Sawers and Bill Haines looked after one lawn each and I thought I would be able to supervise the third. That was until it rained and did it fall down!! I rapidly decided that being just the manager was a better idea and the two players on a bye took over the refereeing responsibilities.
On the first day most games were very close and the standard of play was high. At the end of the day there were four players with five wins each. John Compton spent the most time on the lawns as each of his six games finished with the score at 7/6 - three wins and three losses. The second day saw slightly better weather and the players completed the round robin - 91 games in all. John was still spending a lot of time on the lawn. Saturday saw quite a few unexpected results and the final eight was not decided until the last round.
Sunday dawned clear and sunny for the quarter finals and I refereed again. Mike Jenner, John Compton, Trevor Black and Martyn Prins were successful and then Mike and Martyn won their semi final. The final was played on Monday - the best of five and after 4 ½ hours and 5 games Mike Jenner won the fifth game 7-6 and was declared the winner. Congratulations to both of you.
My personal thanks go to the competitors for their willingness to assist and on 99% of players, their sportsmanship. Thank you also to the referees - Bill Haines, Margaret Sawers, Wendy Fothergill, Kath Coull and Jude Willmore.

NSW Championships - Mens Open Singles, 27th - 30th May 2011
Day 1 - Glorious cloudless day in Sydney, around 18 deg max, lawns running at 10 seconds. Hoops firm but not too testing; oompapah music deferred till Sat afternoon. Format round robin 12 players, winner is player with most wins and net points.
Day 2 - Another pleasant autumn day in Sydney, becoming cloudless after lunch, around 18 deg max, lawns running slower than yesterday at 8.5 (my guess). Hoops firm but not too testing; no Sat afternoon dogs or children as the Concordia Club prepares for their annual ball tonight (so lots of empty bottles everywhere Sun 7:30am). Format round robin 12 players, winner is player with most wins and net points.
Day 3 - After 9 sessions had been completed (out of 11), the position at the top was:
Jim Nicholls 8 wins from 9; 4tps
Martyn Prins 8/9 2tp
Trevor Bassett 7/9 5tp
Mike Hughes 6/9
Day 4 - After 3 days of threatened rain and none falling, the final day made up for it with heavy showers, around 18 deg max, lawns running even slower than previously at 7.5 (my guess).
In the final 2 sessions this morning both leaders suffered 2 defeats, whilst nos 3 and 4 came home with a wet sail. This allowed Trevor to snatch a clearcut victory - which was fortunate, as no-one fancied a playoff in a monsoon.
Congratulations to the victorious Victorian.

This event is the State Handicap Championship for the Beryl Chambers Memorial Trophy and started with 51 competitors playing in a number of regions and clubs in NSW during April and May. Four country regions participated together with players from a number of Sydney clubs.
The tournament committee thanks the coordinators who organized the players and games so well.
The 10 players who won their regional events played in the final at Tempe HQ over the weekend of June 9 to June 13. Handicaps in the final covered the wide range from 0 to 16.
The weather started well on the Thursday but as in most recent years got progressively worse. Showers, rain and cold winds which persisted off and on for the remaining 4 days did not make the conditions pleasant to play in.
As should happen in handicap games many were close with the players with bisques using them to get in front and hoping the lower handicap player would not get in and make breaks. Game 1 was typical: Pat Gilchrist used all her bisques to lead 23-3, John Read roqueted and went to the peg for 23-15, Pat missed, John started a break with the second ball just before time was called. John over rolled hoop 2 back, and Pat had held on to win. Many games progressed this way and a number of the low handicap players ran down substantial leads by their opponents, several finishing after time had been called.
Alix Verge, being the lowest handicapper off 0, had to concede bisques in every game; a total of 90 bisques in the 9 games of the competition. Despite this she played very well with long breaks that were interesting to watch and won five games finishing fifth overall.
With bisques leveling out games as they are intended to, seven of the players won 4 games or more. The most consistent overall was Trevor Black from Maitland Club off a handicap of 4 defending his title from 2010. Trevor won 8 games out of 9 despite giving away bisques in all but two, and won the competition again. As one of the higher handicapped players, Pat Gilchrist played well to win 7 games and finish runner up. David Stanton was third. With a platinum player winning this year, all divisions from platinum to bronze have now won the event since it was played in the regional format.
This event is open to all association croquet players in the state, with regional events being held in clubs or areas to determine the finalists. It would be good to see more players in more clubs, particularly in the country, participate next year. Country players who play in the final receive a subsidy towards the costs of coming to Sydney. Keep a lookout for next years announcement and join in.

Champion of Club Champions, 17th - 21st June 2011
This years Champions event had the representatives of 13 clubs participate: 9 from Sydney and 4 from the country. It is disappointing that more clubs, particularly country clubs with strong association players do not enter their club champion in this event.
For the first time that anyone can remember 4 clubs were represented by women players and three were seeded in the top 8. More about this later.
The event was played in two blocks with four players to proceed to the knockout stage. Each block had four players with much higher rankings than the others and so it worked out, but only just. The fourth qualifier in each block only just scraped through on a net points count back.
In the block stage Jim Nichols was undefeated in one block and Alison Sharpe won the other block with one loss. Triples were completed by Alix Verge, Alan Walsh, John Levick (2) and Alison Sharpe.
As you would expect with so many even players (eight were on handicaps of zero or less) there were some very close games and some nail biting finishes, none more so than the impasse that occurred in the game between Jim Nicholls and Alix Verge. Most players had never seen an impasse and we had to look up the regulations on how to handle it. An impasse is really a stalemate with nothing much changing after each stroke. The position was that Alix was on peg and four back, Jim was on penultimate and in play with a break for the other ball. Jim took his break to the peg but on the way was forced to peel Alix through four back so both player’s back balls are on penultimate. As time had been called Jim pegged out his forward ball putting him one in front. Alix hit the lift shot with the peg ball and pegged out making the score level and with only one ball each remaining. Alix put her other ball near to and slightly on the non playing side of penultimate. Jim played his only ball wide and slightly on the playing side of penultimate and with brilliant placement wired from Alix. So this started the impasse; neither player could hit the other and neither could get in front of the hoop without providing a short roquet to the opponent. So there they stayed hitting a few cms or less with each stroke and keeping the balls wired. After reading the ACA regs an impasse was eventually declared. Alix considered the ACA regs were unfairly weighted against Jim so broke the impasse, and Jim finally won the game.
Two quarterfinals were easy wins to Jim (with a triple) and Alison; the other two saw tight finishes to Rosie Graham and Alix. Alix’s win against Alan Honey deserves full commentary but it is too long to describe in detail. Alan was pegged out and 4 back (22 points) as time was about to be called. Alix was for 1 back and 4 back (15 points). She got her shot in just before time leaving her balls about 10 yards apart near one back. After Alan played into corner 4, Alix’s remarkable break started: she hit the roquet, took off to one back from 8 yards on the non playing side, made it so well her ball ended up on the border near 2 back; she turned and roqueted the ball 18 yards away, rolled to the hoop, made it and finished the break with some other amazing strokes, including putting her other ball right in front of 4 back in the same stroke as getting into position to peg out.
Therefore the semi finals had three of the four places go to the women which shows the strength of the NSW women now. Both semi finals were reasonably easy victories: Jim beat Rosie with a triple and Alix beat Alison.
The best of three final was over all too quickly. Jim and Alix had both displayed excellent form during the previous games: Jim with easy wins and Alix with tough play. Jim won the first game with a triple peel 26-0 for his third consecutive game with that score in the finals. The second game saw Alix make a break but Jim finished with another triple to win 26 - 10.
There were strong performances by nearly all the players given their ranking and most would have been happy with their results. Jim was the standout player overall and fully deserved his victory, winning the four finals games by 104 - 10 with 4 triple peels. Alix was a worthy runner up and signaled her return to competitive association croquet at the top level.

A.C.A. Golf Croquet Bronze Medal, 1st - 3rd July 2011
We played the Bronze Medal in beautiful winter weather, crisp mornings and sunny days.
This event demonstrated the excellent standard of many elite golf croquet players in NSW. Although this event should bring together the top 10 players in NSW, due to commitment of some players the pool was taken from the top 16 or so players and still the standard was exceptionally high. Very few matches were won in straight games, with many games only being won 7/6 and all players had wins.
The Bronze Medal winner was Peter Landrebe with Rosie Graham runner up. Our congratulations to Peter and our best wishes to him when representing NSW in the Gold Medal event later in the year.
We would like to thank the players for their co-operation in the smooth running of the tournament, for their enthusiasm, competitiveness, and mateship. It was a pleasure to manage the tournament. Thanks also go to the referees who gave of their time, Robin Wallace who was here every day, Bill Haines, Wendy Fothergill, Jude Willmore, Ingrid Cohen & Margaret Sawers.

Silver Pennants, Finals 19st and 26th July 2011
The association pennants for 2011 have been completed and by all accounts the competition was enjoyed by all competitors. The entry numbers were most disappointing with only the Silver and Bronze divisions being played. Only eight clubs were involved and all of these were from the metropolitan area. I am certain that Association is played in many other areas - what a pity we never see them!
In the Silver Division three clubs entered and a double round robin was played. Cammeray was the winner and Chatswood the runner up.
The Bronze Division, with six entries, was much closer. Hurstville, Mosman and Manly all had four wins and it was only after the last games had been played that Mosman was declared the winner ahead of Hurstville.
Thank you to all clubs involved. The results were always sent in promptly and there was always some nice person to correct my mistakes. I hope you all learnt lots, improved lots and will be back bigger and better next year.
Jacky McDonald

Golf Croquet Champion of Champions, 16th - 18th September 2011
The inaugural Champion of Champion was held in ideal conditions. There were only seven competitors and the competition was held as a 19 point double round robin. That was interesting in itself as it took some of the players time to adjust to the longer game. Most games lasted about an hour and a half but one pair took thirty three minutes on the nineteenth hoop.
Richard Christian from RSGC was a very welcome new face. It was his first CNSW competition and while he didn’t have many successes he certainly made life difficult for his opposition. He’ll be back and his handicap will go down - I’m sure of that. In fact the players were so impressed with him his handicap was changed from 7 to 5.
At the end of the first round Alison Sharpe was leading with five wins and Peter Freer and John Levick were close behind with four wins. At the end of the second round the final result was not decided until the finish of the last game. Alison and John both won nine games but John was declared the winner on net points.
Thank you very much to those who refereed - Margaret Sawers, John Eddes, Wendy Fothergill, Kath Coull, Ingrid Cohen and Madeline Goodman. They did a sterling job.

Golf Croquet Pennants - Division 1 - Finals, 22nd July 2011
Again entries were disappointing - only two teams entered. Maitland defeated Sutherland 2 matches to 0 on a wet and miserable Thursday on the Newcastle National Park Lawns. Representing Maitland was Trevor Black, Peter Smith, Barry Wells and Stephen Dilley (Jnr) with fine weather only reserves John Compton and Pam Gentle. Sutherland consisted of Ron and Ros Johnstone, John Eddes with Christine Pont making up the four.
Winner: Maitland
Runner-Up: Sutherland
Golf Croquet Pennants - Division 2 - Finals, 22nd July 2011
The Div 2 semis were played on Friday 22/7. The weather was testing with 2 lawns going underwater by noon with a lake emerging slowly from corner 2 on lawn 3 and encroaching toward hoop 2. We stopped at one stage while the monsoon was at full blast and again for a lost container vessel wishing to ask directions to Port Botany. Animals were lining up in twos in the car park.
Prior to and during the deluge Sydney proved too strong for Maitland - must have webbed feet in the Eastern Suburbs. Sydney represented by Jack and Ingrid Cohen, Fay Stove and Kim Morrison won all matches over a Maitland team that struggled in the conditions. John Pace, Anne Freeman, Greg Freeman, Robyn Compton and Bev Smith will be determined to regain the shield for Maitland in 2012. This will be the first year that Maitland has not won the trophy.
Jamberoo edged out Eastwood 2 matches to 1 with Margie Long defeating Dorothy Pratt 7/6,7/4 and Ian Stubbi overcoming Pat Gilchrist 7/3,4/7,7/2. The doubles was won by the dynamic Eastwood duo of Greg Deakin and Shirley McLaughlan over Betty Ball and Gerry Hassett 4/7,7/4,7/6. I believe that some players enjoyed the day. I have to give thanks to the referees who also endured the conditions - and they volunteered. Well done to all players and referees - croquet people are tough not like other wussy sportspeople who call off their games when someone spits in the wind. Unfortunately the final could not be played due to time and water. The final was rescheduled and played on 15th September on a fine and sunny Tempe day. Unfortunately for Jamberoo their gun No 1 singles player Ian Subbi was suffering from wrist tendonitis and played in the doubles under some difficulty. Sydney proved too strong winning all three rubbers as they had in the semi-final. Sydney proved worthy winners.
Winner: Sydney
Runner-Up: Jamberoo
Golf Croquet Pennants - Division 3 - Finals, 29th July 2011
A random draw saw Milton-Ulladulla pitted against Hurstville and Mosman to play Branxton. Milton-Ulladulla proved too strong winning all matches with George Timbs defeating Lorna Davies in 3, Maureen Greenwood overcoming Katherine Love in 2 and the doubles duo of George Emery and Jan Ruggiero defeating Ros Haupt and Pam Hofer in 2. Mosman dominated the match against Branxton with Marjorie Lehman/ Jenny Willis defeating Maureen Dick/Helen Enright in the doubles and Michael Strickland crushing Clare Clark in 2. The other singles was stopped at one game all between Ruth Harden and Richard Westgarth to enable time for the final to be completed on the day.
The final proved to be a nail-biter with the singles being shared between Milton-Ulladulla and Mosman. Michael Strickland (Mosman) again gave a dominant display against George Timbs winning 7/2,7/2. Maureen Greenwood (Milton-Ulladulla) was equally dominant disposing of Richard Westgarth 7/1,7/5. At this stage the doubles was one game apiece with Marjorie and Jenny (Mosman) winning the first 7/6 and George and Jan the second 7/3. When George and Jan ran away to a 4/2 lead in the third and both balls in dominant positions at 7 Milton-Ulladulla looked easy winners. Some brilliant defense at 7 saw the start of a remarkable comeback taking the game to the 13th hoop. Each side had an advantage at 13 with neither able to take advantage of position until Jan ran 13 from the back line to give Milton-Ulladulla the game 7/6, the match and the Division 3 title. Sometimes the brave and audacious shot takes the prize.
Winner: Milton-Ulladulla
Runner-Up: Mosman
NSW Golf Croquet State Handicap - Doubles, 17th - 19th September 2011
The NSW Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles were held at Urunga and Sawtell in perfect conditions from 17 - 19 September. 19 teams entered this year’s event with players coming to the Mid North Coast from as far as Jamberoo in south, Dubbo in the west and Woolgoolga to the north.
The first day had play at both venues and the standard of competition was very high with a number of extremely long games. One game at Sawtell had to be pegged down and completed the next morning when fading light made it almost impossible to see the balls.
Sawtell hosted all the players on the second day, which was another late finish. Block A winners were Gary Barenthien and John Ball with Stephen and Stephen G Dilley runners up. Block B winners were Ray Vize and Graham Innocent with Irene and Terry Abbott runners up. It was a great result for Gary and John from South West Rocks as they have not been playing very long and were looked at very closely by Peter Smith, State Handicapper, and had their handicaps adjusted for the singles.
On the Monday Ray and Graham played Stephen and Stephen in one semi final, while Irene and Terry Abbott played Gary and John in the other. The final was between Ray and Graham and Irene and Terry, while the others decided not to play off for third. Irene and Terry were the eventual winners after three close games. It was great to see the number of players who came to Sawtell on the final day to watch the finals.
Thanks to all Referees who came from Urunga, Sawtell and Maitland, the host Club members who worked in the kitchens to provide lunches and morning teas and all the players for their cooperation to make the event a success.

NSW Golf Croquet State Handicap - Singles, 20th - 23rd September 2011
The NSW Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles were held at Urunga and Sawtell in perfect conditions from 20 - 23 September. 27 players entered this year’s event which gave three Blocks of nine.
The first two days had play at both venues but fortunately players were not required to travel during the day and the standard of competition was very high with a number of extremely long games.
Urunga hosted all the players on the third day with Block play in the morning followed by the quarter finals after lunch. Block A winner was Margaret Leese (Sawtell) with Bob Deopel (Urunga) runner up. Block B winner was Tom Maginnity (Sawtell) and Michael Bone (Myall Park) was runner up. Block C winner was Roger Evans (Jamberoo) with Gary Barenthien (South West Rocks) runner up. The best third place getters to make up the players for the quarter finals were from Block A Graham Innocent (Dubbo) and Block C Terry Abbott (Eastwood). Quaterfinal results were Margaret defeated Terry, Roger defeated Michael, Graham defeated Tom and Gary defeated Bob.
Friday morning had all players again at Urunga for the semi finals and final. Roger was successful in the first semi against Margaret in two, while the match between Gary and Graham kept spectators entertained with Graham finally winning in three.
After a break the players took to the lawns once again to determine this year’s Handicap Singles Champion. The final was an excellent spectacle, but unfortunately the score does not reflect the high standard of play from both players. Graham was the eventual winner in a match that was a fitting end to a successful week.
Thanks to all Referees who worked tirelessly they came from Urunga, Sawtell, Port Macquarie, Eastwood and Maitland, the host Club members who worked in the kitchens to provide lunches and morning teas and all the players for their cooperation to make the event a success. A special thank you to Debbie Anderson, the Venue Manager at Urunga, who made my job as both Tournament Manager and Tournament Referee that much easier as she organised the players and entered the scores which allowed me to concentrate of the Refereeing.

Selectors 10, 7th - 9th October 2011
The Selectors 10 this year was indeed a select group as there were only 9 players!
It was an unusual group. One player, Nick Chapman, hadn’t played ranking games for 4 years, a couple of others, Alix Verge and John Eddes, were making AC comebacks with only a few games under the belt, Jonathan Bowen was on the rebound from Queensland, and two players, Martyn Prins and Alan Honey, had each racked up over 100 games in the last 12 months. The field was completed by Trevor Black, Brian Smith and Stephen Howes.
Played at Tempe 7th-9th October on fairly fast lawns under variable skies which, luckily, didn’t deliver the forecast rain, play was of a good standard. However, no Triple Peels were completed, but a Quintuple attempt by Martyn Prins failed only after the first three were successful. Enterprising but unlucky.
At the end of the first day, no one enjoyed a day of unalloyed triumph but four players had two wins each. The second day ended with Stephen Howes the surprise leader, but with Alan Honey and Nick Chapman also finishing the day on four wins.
Alan Honey finished on top with 7 wins from 8 games, winning with average scores of 26-7, an impressive display only marred by being beaten in the first game of Day One by Stephen Howes - perhaps he hadn’t warmed up from Queanbeyan weather. Jonathan Bowen was runner-up.
This is the second time that Alan has won this event and he now joins the other nine players in The Bronze Medal. Congratulations!

Bronze Handicap Singles, 10th - 13th October 2011
Day 1 presented pleasant spring weather for this tournament. Sue Nichols, (Manly) and John Hastings, (Sydney) were the front runners on Day 1 pegging out both their games. Peg Jones, (Manly) also lived up to her name by pegging out the first game of the day. The other winner being Graham Maynard, (Cammeray)
Day 2 saw the afternoon with a short but heavy shower which sent all players scurrying for wet weather gear. The two front runners, Sue and John, faced off in the afternoon with Sue the ultimate winner, Peg and Graham won their 2nd game with Roger Liles, (Cammeray) breaking his duck beating Beth Taylor, (Manly).
Day 3 saw Sue complete the perfect result having won all her games. John was runner-up with 4 wins. Graham and Roger played for 4th and 5th positions with Roger the winner. Peg held on for 3rd place on net points.
Due to a communication breakdown I found I had no referees on Day 1 and had to watch over three games on three lawns. My thanks to Dennis Faggoter and John Eddes who responded to my plea for help. I also tender my thanks to Kath Coull and Heather Smallbone who responded to my plea and looked after the games on Days 2 and 3.
Of concern is the fact that none of the players knew how to set the hoops. Over the previous weekend the hoops had been set for the selectors 10 and needed opening up for this tournament.
