Gold Doubles, 16th - 18th February 2010
There was a disappointing number of entries for this tournament - even after the handicap range had been extended, there were only three pairs entered, so a double round robin was played.
The critical day was day 2, when the winning partnership of Jackie McDonald and Peter Smith (Maitland) lost their first game to Margaret Burke and Brian Smith by one hoop, then won their second game against them by a single point.
Although there was some splendid roqueting, the overall standard of play was moderate, with only one game being pegged out.

Bronze Singles, 22nd - 26th February 2010
Day 1 - refereed by Dennis Faggotter (Cammeray). A particularly hot day. At 10.30 am the outside temperature was 30 degrees in the shade. At 1.30 pm it was 34 degrees and at 2.30 pm 35 degrees.
Wall Fernance was unable to play his second game suffering from heat exhaustion and Geoff Boyce kindly agreed to suspend their game to be played on Friday morning at 7.00 am before the last games of the competition began at 9.30 am.
Another player, Georgina Offner, was suffering visible distress with only 30 minutes time left on the clock of the 2nd game. Patricia Gilchrist who was Georgina's opponent in this game agreed that it would be best to suspend play for the day.
Patricia and I received a lesson in how to peg down a game from Dennis Faggotter, an experienced ex state team player and referee. It was really interesting and a valuable experience for all concerned.
Day 2 - refereed by Heather Smallbone (Chatswood). The Temperature was much more tolerable today with a cool wind blowing across the lawns. Wall Fernance and Georgina Offner had recovered and both were able to play again.
Day 3 - refereed by Fay Stove (Coogee). John Campey has donated a thermometer to CNSW which will be housed on the Manager's table to be put out first thing before competition play.
Day 4 - refereed by Margot Johnson (Port Hacking). John Campey fixed the equipment trolley for lawn 2. "Thank you John for saving our backs." It is very difficult to try to steer a two wheel trolley with six hoops, a croquet centre peg, four flags and eight corner pegs etc on only one wheel.
Conclusion: By Saturday, 28th February, 2010 all the scores had been publicised in the Sydney Morning Herald, the winner being John Campey from Epping Club with 6 wins out of 7 games. The runner up was David Stanton from Cammeray Club with 4 wins out of 7 games.
Overall, three players had 4 wins, three had 3 wins and one had 1 win with an 18 point score. An inspiring competition for all concerned as everyone had a win . The game scores show that the completion was fierce with anyone being a contender for the Bronze Title.
Well done John and David!

Silver Singles, 2nd - 4th March 2010
Disappointing again to see only 3 silver players enter this tournament, so a double round robin was played. To gain experience, David Stanton (Cammeray) H’cap14, entered. He accredited himself very well, winning 2 games.
Although a couple of players are approaching the gold division, I couldn’t help noticing their lack of confidence to make I back & continue to 3 back & set a leave. Likewise, there was often reluctance to retrieve balls from corners & boundaries, especially if it was an opponents ball. Apart from this there were some close & interesting games.
Alan Crapp (Chatswood) who is studying the Umpires Exam papers, came out to Tempe on Wednesday morning to help referee, again to get experience.
Thank you to the players for their assistance in setting up, & clearing the lawns each day.
Congratulations to winner Bob Green and runner-up Greg Deakin.

Senior Citizens Week, 22nd - 26th March 2010
With the withdrawal of Roger Timms through sickness on the Sunday a redraw was announced as players arrived on the Monday morning.
Day 1 was quite a pleasant day as it was cool and overcast with wet weather jackets required for a while in the morning. The results for the day were quite interesting as each player had won one and lost won. At the end of the day Michael Mills was in the lead and Stephen Howes in last place but threatening.
Day 2 was a warm to hot day, very humid and tiring. Brian Smith lost both games badly and dropped out of any consideration; whilst Georgie Ofner used her bisques well to record two wins and take the lead at the end of the day. Stephen Howes managed to get his game together to move into second place.
Day 3 was a cooler day, overcast for much of the day with a good breeze. Mac Thomson at last felt that his game had come back, recording two wins as did Michael Mills and Stephen Howes. At the days conclusion Stephen led with 5 wins from Mac on 4.
Day 4 a warm day but not an unpleasant one. It produced some surprises. Stephen lost to Michael Mills, Greg lost the unloseable having both clips on rover and Bruce only on 3 & 4, Georgie, a 16 handicap player had a run of 11 using only 3 bisques, Mac losing to Bob Green by one point. Interestingly, Stephen in first place and the writer, in last place were the only players finishing the tournament with net negative points.
During the week, because handicaps are updated immediately a trigger point is crossed saw S Tephen Howes being promoted to a 3 and Mac Thomson relegated to a 7. Bruce Buchanan came to within 1 point of going to Platinum on two occasions only to lose the following game.
In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have taken on the manager’s role, as I found it difficult to prepare myself to play and maintain concentration during play.

NSW Golf Croquet Championships - Mens Open Singles, 15th - 18th April 2010
The weather was good; the croquet was interesting and very competitive. No one could be taken lightly. The music and strudel from Concordia was enjoyable but the children and their inattentive sometimes-rude parents presented some problems on Saturday and Sunday. Just the usual at Tempe.
Apart from demolishing the biscuits all participants were focussed on winning as many games and matches as was possible physically and mentally.
Mike Jenner proved to be superior to all comers only dropping a game to Bernie McAlary and a match to Nick Macoun. "2 Blades" Johnstone remained consistent throughout even beating his doubles partner John Levick in the last carry over game to ensure runner - up status. John Compton withdrew on the fourth morning with a back problem and so all results were amended to accommodate the withdrawal.
There were 29 games decided at the 13th hoop - that’s the luck or lack of in 13-point games.
Special thanks to Bev Smith, the tournament referee and her band of referees - Jacky McDonald, Ingrid Cohen, Wendy Fothergill, Bill Haines, Kath Coull, Jude Wilmore, Ros Johnstone and John Eddes who gave at least one day of their time and energy to ensure that games were refereed in a professional manner. The efforts of these people prepared to referee all day with little reward except a love of the sport was greatly appreciated by the players. Well done all the referees.
Thanks to the technophiles or reverse Luddites Martyn, Peter F, John E and Dennis for their willingness even eagerness to help a new manager to navigate through the recording system.
Congratulations to all the players for their play, their support and their friendliness to the organising staff and each other, making for a happy but competitive tournament. Best of 3 matches takes high degrees of cooperativeness, concentration and commitment as well as energy. The Men’s Singles was a high quality event well worth watching and much appreciated by all the spectators.

NSW Golf Croquet Championships - Open Doubles, 26th - 28th April 2010
Conditions were generally pleasant with the lawns double cut and running between 8.5 and 9.5 plummers.
Many thanks to Rosie for her pre-dawn grass-mowing efforts.
Play was at times very competitive, with 17 of the 66 matches decided at the 13th hoop.
Christine and Max's efforts under pressure were noteworthy, with 5 of their 11 matches decided at the 13th hoop.
The pre-tournament prediction that 7 wins would be enough to reach the semis fell short of the mark, as the closeness of the competition led to all 4 semifinalists getting 9 wins.
Many thanks to the many asst managers who organised food, drink, score sheets, and cleaning up - much appreciated.

...and the winner's observations:
The massed spectators definitely got their money's worth with the best-of-three final, which started at 8:30am, not finishing until shortly after 1:30pm. While the calibre of play on the day was not the highest displayed by the four finalists over the course of the tournament with a number of missed hoops, there was plenty to keep the interest level up including:
Many thanks to Ron Johnstone for refereeing the final, to Martyn for Tournament Managering, and to John Levick, Rosie Graham, Jackie McDonald and Ros Johnstone for spectatoring some or all of the final.

NSW Golf Croquet Championships - Open Singles, 29th April - 2nd May 2010
What an interesting 4 days of golf croquet! Congratulations to all 13 competitors for their participation and for the very high standard of croquet played. All players gave their all, both physically and mentally, enthralling the spectators with their skilful play and tactical know-how.
The quarter-finalists were John Levick, Peter Smith, Peter Freer, Martyn Prins, Max Wiltshire, Ron Johnstone, Nick Macoun and Pam Gentle. These matches were played over 3 games with the winners being John, Peter F, Ron and Nick.
Ron defeated Nick and John defeated Peter to set up a final between Ron and lodger John. Ron eventually outplayed and outstayed John winning a very topsy-turvy 3 set battle.
Special thanks to Bev Smith, the tournament referee and her team of referees - Bill Haines, Jacky McDonald, Kath Coull, Betty Daniel, Max Hooper and John Compton - who gave freely of their time to ensure the competition ran smoothly. The players appreciated having referees for all their matches.
My sincere thanks to all the players and referees who helped ensure a smooth and successful Open Singles Championship.

NSW Championships - Mens Open Singles, 27th - 30th May 2010
The NSW Men’s Open Tournament was held from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 May.
There were 19 entrants in total, giving 2 blocks of 10 and 9 respectively.
Because of the shortage of lawns at Tempe, play was divided over Tempe and 3 North Shore clubs, namely Mosman, Cammeray and Chatswood.
Conditions were mild for most of the period (18-20 deg), but with occasional very heavy rain causing Cammeray to be rescheduled.
Lawns at Tempe have been improving this year, due to hard work by Rosie Graham, Pete Landrebe and Scott the greenkeeper, and were comfortable to play, running around the 9 mark.
Special four-finned steel hoops built to 3 and 11/16 inch standards were set, and proved to be firm but fair.
This was a strong field, with previous winners and up-and-comers sprinkled throughout.
The format was block play for the first 3 days, followed by the top 4 from each block going into a knockout on Sunday the 30th.
In Block A Mike Hughes played some good croquet to beat Pete Landrebe, John Levick and Stephen Richards amongst others to come 5th with 5 wins from 9.
Gareth Bushill played less well than his best, winning 2 matches - both by 1 hoop after time.
In Block B Alan Walsh had good and bad days but ended up winning all 3 matches against the top seeds on the last day for 6 wins from 8 to make 2nd spot.
In the game against Alan Walsh on the Robert Fulford lawn, Tim Murphy felt motivated by the special feeling of the place and embarked on a sextuple peel. Tim broke down attempting to peel 3b go to 1b pioneer. The peel stayed in good position for rush peel but strikers went several yards past the pioneer. The dribbler to 1b pioneer hilled and missed.
Martyn Prins started inauspiciously with 2 losses at Mosman but then won all the rest - including matches against top seed Trevor Bassett and Alan Walsh - for 6 wins to take 3rd spot.
In the quarter-finals Pete Landrebe beat Kevin Beard with a flawless 5th turn triple, Honey beat Walsh in the battle of the Alans, Jim Nicholls beat Simon Watkins, and Stephen Richards just got past Martyn Prins 24-22 after Martyn blobbed in penult in his winning turn.
The semi-finals saw Jim Nicholls getting up past Alan Honey, and an exciting 2-ball finish from Pete Landrebe - after failing his TPO - to beat Stephen Richards 26-24.
A smooth display from Pete Landrebe - a multiple previous winner and the highest-ranked player there - gave him a 26TP-0 win over Jim, and the Men's title.
Many thanks to the managers, hoop-setters, and supporting cast who helped to make this competition fun and run so smoothly:

NSW State Handicap - Beryl Chambers Memorial Trophy, Finals 3rd - 6th June 2010
The number of entries in the regional rounds was considerably lower this year but nine players qualified for the final series by winning the regional event in their club or region.
The regions/clubs involved were: Nowra, ACT/Queanbeyan, Maitland, Wagga Wagga, Orange, Sutherland, Sydney North West and Sydney North Shore.
The final series was held at Tempe over 4 days, June 3 to June 6. It began on Thursday in rainy weather which varied between light showers to heavy, Friday was terrible weather all day, Saturday was a good day and Sunday started well but ended in rain.
Despite the conditions the players played throughout apart from a period on Friday when the lawns were flooded which cause play to finish in the dark.
All players had at least two wins and all but one had some losses. There were a number of very close finishes, none closer than one of the early matches between Roger Timms and Brian Smith where all four clips were on peg just as time was called. Roger hit the peg, then Brian hit the peg and Roger hit the peg in extra time, to score the ‘golden point’.
16 games were decided by 6 points or less, some as golden points in extra time, and this is how handicap games should be. It was good to see most players using their bisques to set up and make breaks rather than defensively to stop their opponent.
Trevor Black from Maitland Club was very consistent and was undefeated to comfortably win the event with Graham Cullen from Nowra the runner up and Peter Lloyd third - all three are country representatives.
Although conditions made things difficult all players enjoyed the final.
A thank you to the referees, Heather Smallbone, Neil Hardie, Fay Stove and Patricia Goldrick, who also braved the rain to adjudicate in the games.
The format with regional events followed by a final is popular with the players but it would be nice to see more players participating to provide more competition in the regional rounds. Most blocks this year were only 4 players whereas 6 to 8 would be more interesting. See if you can become interested next year.

Champion of Club Champions, 19th - 22nd June 2010
Mother Nature smiled sweetly upon the 12 competitors in this years championship. The field came from as far west as Wagga Wagga and Canberra, Forster in the north, the Hunter region and Sydney. It was perhaps the hottest field I have seen in many a year. Ray Vize, Brian Smith and Ron Johnstone (all newcomers) fought out some very hard battles against more experienced players and had some very good wins. In a very hard fought comp there were only two triple peels, one to Tim Murphy and John Levick also scored one. All competitors had at least one win. Tim Murphy and Alison Sharpe had one of the most exciting finishes seen for a long time when they were timed out at 22 all. Alison took the golden point when Tim was unlucky to make a terrific attempt to run his last hoop only to give a wiring lift to Alison who finished in her usual style. At the start of the last days play after 9 rounds three players had 7 wins from 9 games. After round 10 Tim led with 8 games and net of 108, Allison, 8 games net 102 and John Levick with 8 games net of 94. Alison had a win over Ray Vize 26-11 and Tim and John played to time with Tim gaining a 24-20 victory. Alison, after a wonderful 10/10 winning sequence in the Eire Cup, was the deserved victor finally winning by 5 hoops from runner up Tim after both won 9 games out of 11. My congratulations to both of them and to all the other competitors who played within the spirit of the sport. Croquet, with this field, was the eventual winner. My thanks goes especially to Brian Smith, Ron Johnstone and Martyn Prins without whose help, my job as manager would have been much more difficult.

NSW Championships - Womens Open Singles, 19th - 21st June 2010
This event had 10 players, which included Tricia Devlin and Anne Quinn from Victoria and Rosemary Newsham from Queensland, and was played in very pleasant sunny conditions on the Saturday and Sunday.
The top seeds, Rosemary Graham, Claire Bassett, Tricia Devlin and Alison Sharpe, worked their way through to register 6 wins apiece over the first two days making for a very interesting final day. The first round on day 3 match ups saw Alison defeating Rosemary and Claire defeating Tricia. The second round saw Claire and Alison fight out a close 26-21 win to Claire whilst Tricia defeated Rosemary. In the 3rd round Tricia and Alison fought out a close game to determine 2nd and 3rd places with Alison having to peg one ball out after time to win the match. Claire was the eventual winner, being undefeated throughout the tournament and only dropping 4 points having pegged out 8 of her 9 games.
Anne and Jean had a good final day winning all three matches.
Annette Du Preez, a 16 handicap player, may not have won any games, but gained in confidence as the tournament progressed resulting in her highest score and a break of 5. It is a pity more do not enter these events as the encouragement and advice received from senior players is invaluable.

A.C.A. Bronze Medal - Golf Croquet, 2nd - 4th July 2010
Ten NSW players were selected to compete for the Australian Golf Croquet Bronze Medal. The winner of the Bronze Medal will be invited to contest for the Gold Medal against Bronze Medal winners from other States, at the Sunshine Coast in late August.
The standard of competition was extremely high, with every one of the competitors being capable of winning the Bronze Medal. Nearly 50% of all matches went to the best of 3 games and over 50% of all games showed a 7-5 or 7-6 result.
There were a number of standout games, with the very interesting contests being those when a "big hitter" and a "touch player" were playing against each other.
The final match was between the #1 and #2 seeds, as was fitting. The medal was decided not only by this match, but by the final game of the match. A Verge defeated J Levick 2-7 7-6 7-5.
I would like to congratulate all players, for their great competitiveness, their sportsmanlike attitude, courtesy to each other and to the referees and to myself as manager.
I would like to thank the referees who gave of their time to referee, country areas to do so. In particular those referees who travelled from Maitland, Newcastle and Blue Mountains. It was disappointing that of the 19 metropolitan clubs only Sutherland supplied referees for this high standard competition.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Pennants, July 2010
This year’s pennants have been most successful and thanks are due to all the clubs and players who competed. The results were all sent on time and my maths errors were politely pointed out quite promptly. To those players who won, well done-to those that didn’t manage it this year there is always next year. .
The final results are as follows:-
Gold - Winner Maitland, Runner up Mosman
Silver - Winner Chatswood, Runner up Mosman
Bronze - Winner Cammeray, Runner up Manly
The final of the Bronze Division was held at Tempe on Thursday 22nd July and it was really pleasing to see the numbers who arrived to support their clubs. All games were closely contested. Cammeray won the doubles 11-10, Manly won the No 1 Singles 14-13 and then Cammeray won the No 2 Singles 15-12.
Thank you to Heather Smallbone and Kath Coull for refereeing and to the team members for providing such nice refreshments.
In previous years some of the finals have been played as the best of three but after careful consideration it was decided that this was not necessary. Only one division needed a final and it was preferable to play that the same way as they played during the group matches.

Golf Croquet Pennants, July 2010
In the following results M = Matches, G = Games, H = Hoops.
Division 1
Maitland A completed the rounds undefeated with a 2 matches to 1 win over Sutherland. Previously Maitland A defeated Maitland B 2-1 and Sutherland defeated Maitland B 3-0 . The Maitland A/ Sutherland match was a close affair with Maitland singles players Trevor Black and Stephen Dilley(J) starring with best of 3 game wins over Nick Macoun and John Eddes. The ever reliable Johnstone team destroyed the Maitland veteran team of Peter Smith and John Compton. Once again Roz showed Ron the art of hoop running. Maitland wins Division 1 Pennants with Sutherland second.

Silver Brooch, 9th - 12th August 2010
Day 1 saw some tight finishes. Time had been called when Bob Green took to the court and had a run of 9 and peg out to defeat Greg Deakin by 1. In the afternoon Ron Humpherson had a run of six to draw level with Greg, however he missed the peg. Greg then took contact and scored the winning hoop after time. In the meantime Mac Thomson had a run of 11 including the peg to beat Bob Green by 1 point, (Bob overlooked his contact option and missed the lift roquet after time had run out.).
Day 2 was cold and miserable with drizzling rain and this was reflected in the morning’s standard of play. After a disastrous morning Ron Humpherson got it all together to peg out and beat Mac. At the end of day two Bob leads Mac by 10 net points both having won three games with Ron and Greg on one win each.
Brian Smith (Manager)
Unfortunately after the start of Day 3 Brian Smith felt unwell and John Eddes filled in.
The morning games produced wins to Greg Deakin after being well behind, and to Bob Green. Greg & Bob also won the afternoon games despite late breaks by both their opponents.
Bob Green was the overall winner with 5 wins from 6 games, and Mac Thomson was runner up on countback from Greg Deakin.

NSW Championships - Open Singles, 13th - 19th September 2010
This event was played over 4 days from September 14 to 17. A very small entry of only 8 players (compared with 18 last year) was missing most of the top 10 players in the state. This may have been in part due to a number of top players having spent several weeks in the UK while the MacRobertson Shield was played, and some players had clashes with interstate and golf croquet events, but the trend of reduced entries in this and other events is disappointing. A single block of 8 players played a round robin at Tempe and the four highest ranked players finished in the top 4 places to proceed to the best of 3 game knockout stage. There were a number of close games during block play. Mike Hughes had the misfortune to miss pegouts in two consecutive games to eventually lose 26-25 in each of them. All players won at least 2 of their 7 games in this round robin phase. The most notable upset ws perhaps Brian Smith beating Tony Hall in round 6, with Tony unbeaten to that stage.
The semi finals both went to 3 games. Mike Hughes won the first game against Alan Walsh and had a comfortable lead in game 2, but Alan got in and played soundly to win game 2, and won game 3 comfortably. In the other semi-final, Martyn Prins won game 1 fairly comfortably, and Tony Hall had a comfortable win in game 2. Game 3 was the most interesting. Tony had the game well in hand, but then accidentally pegged himself out! A dour struggle ensued until Tony ran a very long penult hoop and subsequently hit Martyn and finished.
The final between Alan & Tony was a very exciting affair. Alan won the first match 26-22 and seemed to be about to win the second with the same score, but failed penult (both players for penult & peg) to enable Tony to finish, again 26-22. The third game followed a similar pattern. Alan was running a triple with his second ball which broke down at rover. Tony also proceeded to try a triple and was in good shape to do the final peel until he has the misfortune to partially block the rover hoop with his escape ball. He bombarded the blocking ball clear but could not peel partner, so he competed the break and set a leave. Alan had one shot to decide the game …. and he hit! This is the second time Alan has won the NSW Open (2008 was the previous time), and each time he has hit a lift shot in game 3 of the final where to miss was almost sure defeat.
In the 3rd/4th playoff Martyn beat Mike in 2 fairly clearcut games. The highlight was early in game 1 where, with Mike set up, Martyn ran about a 10-yard angled hoop2 and then ran 9!
The plate played a round robin with the two leaders to play a final. Stepehen Howes was undefeated, but going into the last round of the round robin no player was sure to qualify, and all players had some chance. In the event Brian Smith beat Neil Hartley narrowly, to make the final. The final was closely fought with Brian eventually winning 20-18. With time having expired, Stephen had a 50/50 4-back hoop to tie (with chances to go on and take the lead) but missed.
Conditions were tricky. On Tuesday the lawns were very slow as they had not been cut for a week. They improved on Wednesday after they had been cut, but were only moderately paced and bumpy in parts. Tuesday was damp in the morning, with a torrential downpour in the afternoon. Fortunately the weather improved thereafter and players were much happier. The tournament ran very smoothly - all players arrived promptly in the mornings to set up the lawns. In particular Brian Smith was first to arrive every morning and also helped me with management duties (this being my first stint as manager).

NSW Golf Croquet State Handicap - Singles, 21st - 23rd September 2010
The NSW Golf Croquet Handicap Championship - Singles event was held at Taree from Tuesday 21st September to Thursday 23rd. It followed the Doubles event which had been held in Gloucester from Saturday 11th to Monday 20th.
The championship began on Tuesday morning after a welcome to the competitors by Taree Croquet Club President, Bill Freeman. Among the 20 competitors, who came from 7 country clubs as far as Canberra in the south and Urunga in the north, were 4 members of the Over 50’s Golf Croquet Team who are off to Cairo in early October. One of these 4 was Taree member, Joe Dimech.
The weather was good and with 6 matches being held simultaneously, there was plenty of croquet. All competitors met the challenge of Taree’s 3 individually different courts and enjoyed the hospitality and camaraderie of a country croquet carnival.
Two blocks of 10 competitors were run over Tuesday and Wednesday. The results were close in both blocks and the outcome depended on the last round. Even then the majority of places were decided on net points.
Block A: 1st: Chris Crellin (Forster) 2nd: Ray Vize (Forster)
Block B: 1st: Bob Hokin (Taree) 2nd: Joe Dimech (Taree)
On Thursday, Chris and Joe played one semi-final, while Bob and Ray played the other. The final was played between Joe and Ray, while Chris and Bob played off for 3rd place. Results:
1st: Ray Vise
2nd: Joe Dimech
3rd: Chris Crellin
President Robyn Wallace and Jacky McDonald of the Tournament Committee both spoke to the assembled spectators, congratulating the winner and thanking the referees, who came from Maitland, Forster and Taree, for their valued assistance, the Taree Croquet Club Members who worked in the kitchen to provide lunches and morning and afternoon teas, and all competitors for their cooperation.
I would make a comment similar to the one John Compton made in the September 2010 "Croquet NSW Newsletter" regarding the NSW GC State Pennants. If this event is a State Championship, there should be players from all over the State, including Sydney.

Eva Short Memorial Trophy, 22nd - 23rd October 2010
Because of the low numbers for this years Event the decision was made to have a double ‘Round Robin’ over the 2 day period.. Glorious weather on the first day and temperatures were such that we were all continually searching for shade. All 6 games on Day 1 were pegged out as the players were continually looking for good breaks and effective leaves. Claire and Alison had a good tussle with both players each getting their first break of 9 early in the game. Claire went to the peg with her 2nd ball(black) and when Alison hit in, she went to the peg and pegged out Claire’s black ball. Alison’s back ball was on 4 back and once getting in was about to make Rover when ‘clunk’ went the red ball as it hit and sat on the right leg of Rover. Therefore the pressure was on Claire as she walked onto the lawn to then hit the red ball with her blue ball that sat just north of Hoop 4 (18yds) and ‘Whallop’ she succeeded !! Claire then gathered up the 3 balls and continued with a faultless 3 ball break to finish the game 26 – 23.
No great suprizes on Day 2. Pam Gentle and Nerida Taylor gave each other various opportunities on the lawn in their last game of the day and could have gone either but Pam finally won the game 17 - 8. In the early afternoon a sudden storm appeared from nowhere bringing torrential rain in a very short space of time. Adapting to this sudden and dramatic change of pace was all important for all our games that afternoon. What did catch everyone’s attention was a Bride arriving at the Concordia Club at 3.00pm in the middle of the storm tip-toeing her way between puddles between Lawns 2 & 3 heading for the Concordia Club where the assembled guests were eagerly waiting her arrival !!!
Congratulations go to this years Winner Claire Bassett and Runner-up Alison Sharpe.

A.C.A. Bronze Medal, 5th - 7th November 2010
The Association Croquet ACA Bronze Medal was played over the weekend of Nov 5 to Nov 7. This invitation event is for the best players in NSW with 9 players selected and one, Jim NIcholls earning his place by winning the Selectors 10 event. This was probably the strongest field for this prestigious event ever in NSW with all players having minus handicaps. The winner represents NSW in the Australian Gold and Silver Medal event in Tasmania in March 2011.
Unfortunately the weather was not particularly kind with play starting on Friday in unseasonably cold weather and the first session on Saturday played in rain with cool conditions but improved as the day went on.
The first round of the draw has the top ranked players playing the lower ranked players and surprisingly 3 of the top 4 seeds were beaten in the first round. After that on Friday the matches pretty well went according to expectations with only one other upset. Four different players completed triple peels on day 1: Jim Nicholls, Stephen Richards, Trevor Bassett and Alan Walsh. Overall the play was interesting and of high quality with some close finishes, particularly Tim Murphy hitting the peg in a 2 ball game from the A baulk to win 26-25 with his opponent John Levick’s single ball set up 3 feet from the peg ready to peg out and wired from Tim.
Alison Sharpe started day 2 with a triple peel against Trevor Bassett. The results against rankings continued on day 2 with 7 games being upsets, led by Jim Nicholls who kept beating everyone. Day 2 finished with 3 players on 5 wins from 6 games with Jim Nicholls a narrow leader on net points from Stephen Richards, with Peter Landrebe some distance behind, and on paper Jim having the easiest draw on the last day.
Day 3 saw some extraordinary results with 9 of the 15 games going against rankings; overall 20 of the 45 games did so indicating just how strong and even the field was. Peter Landrebe made a strong run to win the event with 3 wins including 2 triple peels and a big net points improvement. Stephen Richards dropped off a bit winning one game, but the giant killer, Jim Nicholls had three more wins with sufficient margins to beat Peter Landrebe overall by 15 net points.
Overall 6 players completed triple peels, with Peter Landrebe doing two.
Therefore the top four were Jim Nicholls, Peter Landrebe, Stephen Richards and Tim Murphy. Every other player in the event won 3 games, with places 5 to 10 only decided on net points. A very even contest throughout. So Jim will represent NSW at the ACA Gold medal, and based on his play during this competition we may have another player in NSW who will be able to match it with the best in Australia – a good sign for the strength of our interstate team in the future.

Silver Handicap Singles, 15th - 17th November 2010
Five players contested the Silver Handicap event on November 15 to 17. Day one was played in rain throughout but the other two days were very good croquet weather.
Strangely, the play on the first day in the rain was the best of the competition with 3 games out of 4 being pegged out and breaks being made by all players, with and without the help of bisques.
Some low scores eventuated in later games with fear of the opponent seeming to override the desire to make breaks.
Heading in to the last round Lesley Fransen was undefeated and Barbara McDonald needed to beat Lesley by 8 points to win on a count back. When the bisques were all used by both players Barbara led 13-4, just enough to lead the event at that stage. It then progressed to 19-6 and finally to 20-10 giving Barbara a win in the game and the competition.
An unusual situation happened at the other end of the final table, with Margaret Sawers finishing fourth, but scoring more hoops than all the other players.
