Silver Doubles, 14th - 18th February 2005
The NSW Silver Doubles was played in usual February weather - very hot! Even so the players enjoyed their games, having to play each other twice, as not enough entries were received - come on Silver players where are you? Please come to Tempe and make the competitions more interesting for all players.
Alix Verge had breaks of one 6 and three 5s, Margaret Durham had a 5 and a 6, Mary Fernance had one 5. Margaret Durham, Kath Coull and Alix Verge played forward games setting up the court nicely throughout the competition.
The winners were Alix Verge and Margaret Durham.
Runners up were Kath Coull and Betty Daniel.
Congratulations to the winners and indeed all the players who came to make the competition. There is one stalwart who we should mention, she is always fronting up for competitions, regardless of the weather she just loves to play - Marie Waterman - good on you Marie!

Win Dickinson Memorial Trophy, 21st - 25th February 2005
All the players played their games in a friendly and enjoyable manner. There were quite a lot breaks made during the matches by most of the players, which was great to watch. Two of the games were nail biters and very close. The first was between Janelle Wood and Robyn Stock, it went as follows: Janelle had one clip on 3 back, came on to play, made a break of 9 with black and stopped on Rover. Robyn came on, yellow was on 2 back, played red and made a break of 12 leaving red on the peg. Janelle came on missed her roquet by a cat's whisker, on came Robyn made her roquet and went on to win by 26 - 19.
The second game was between Pam Gentle and Janelle Wood. Pam made a break of 9 with Blue, on came Janelle she missed her roquet with red, Pam played black and made 12 hoops, Janelle played red and roqueted yellow, made 12 hoops and was hoping to peg out the black ball - instead Janelle wired herself with the two balls, on came Pam ran the next two hoops and pegged out, the final score being 26 - 21 Pam the winner.
We had a couple of extremely hot days and the ladies were affected by them especially playing 3 games on one day, some felt it was too much playing the 3 games during February which seems to be the hottest month of the year.
Congratulations to the winner Robyn Stock and to the runner up Pam Gentle, and indeed to all the players for their efforts and many thanks to the referees/umpires who always are ready to stand up and be there for the players.

Gold Doubles, 4th - 6th March 2005
The NSW Gold Doubles was played at Tempe. We welcomed Jill Edwards back from her holiday cruising around South America, which she enjoyed very much and we were envious of her. There were a couple of bright sparks playing which brightened up the events and gave us a laugh, we all need a laugh now and then.
On the last day of the competition and the last matches, there were 4 teams who had lost only 1 game each, their net points were as follows:
Bill Coull & Jack Daniel on +18
Janelle Wood & Paul Taylor on +13
David Archer & Mac Thompson on +12
John Hanscom & Fay Stove on +11
so you can see how close this competition was.
The scores of those games were:
D. Archer & M. Thompson 23 Defeated J. Hanscom & F. Stove 16
J. Wood & P. Taylor 24 Defeated W. Coull & J. Daniell 13
Overall winners being J. Wood & P. Taylor
and the runners up D. Archer & M. Thompson
Congratulations to the winners, we hope to see you all line up for next years Gold Doubles and maybe some extra players come and enjoy, not only the games but the fun and happy, friendly gatherings we have at Tempe.
Thanks go to all referees for their help during the games.

Rookies and Novices, 7th - 11th March 2005
Congratulations to Brian Smith from Eastwood, who won all of his matches pegging out four of the six matches.
One match between Brian Smith and John Love, was a real cliff hanger - going into extra time, it was eventually won by Brian Smith 15 to 14 with John Love playing an excellent match.
Every player played their games in a very sportsman like manner.
To all of the players, this was their first major competition and with referees, they handled it very well, they have gone away feeling they have learnt a little of the art of croquet.
Congratulations to all.
Under the guidance of the tournament referee Margot Johnson the players were shown how to set the hoops to championship standard, thank you Margot.

Senior Citizens Week, 14th - 18th March 2005
The Senior Citizens Tournament was played in extremely hot weather for two days, rain on one day and blustery on another.
There were a lot of breaks made during the week. Janelle made a break of 11 without taking any bisques, Stephen Howes made a break of 12 using only 3 balls. Mac Thompson played a forward game with great hoop and rush placement.
Fred Harvey played Stephen Howes after time being called - Fred had 1 clip on rover and 1 clip on the peg, Stephen went in with 1 clip on rover and yellow on penult, he played yellow, roqueted red, made penult, peeled red and yellow through rover, did not get a position to peg out both balls, so he roqueted black and pegged his yellow ball out, final score 25 - 24 to Stephen.
The Winner - Janelle Wood, Cheltenham
The Runner up - Lydia Mitchell, Sydney
Congratulations to the winner and runner up and also to all the players, as any of four players could have been the winner on the beginning of the last day the other two players were Mac Thomson from Warrawee and Stephen Howes from Cammeray. We would like to thank the players for coming early and setting up the lawns and tidying up after all the games every day. Thanks also to our Referees who were willing to come, two of the ladies came to referee from Maitland and Toronto - much appreciated.

Fransted Trophy, 25th - 28th March 2005
The Fransted Trophy was held from 25th to 28th March 2005, one game played between Pam Gentle and Ros Johnstone was closely contested with Pam winning close to time.
John Fransen went to four back, 5 hoops early, missed the hoop, took a bisque and tried again, made the hoop at which point his opponent pointed out his error, but it did not matter to John as he finally won 26 to 12, John's opponent was victim to court 3 hoop 1 being jawed twice, this was only bettered by Ron Johnstone getting caught 3 times in that same hoop, in spite of that Ron still made the semi-final.
Stephen Howes was undefeated in his block and also the finals. There were several breaks made throughout the events.
In the semi-finals between Stephen Howes and Harry Taylor, Stephen pegged out his strikers ball and then took eight attempts to peg out his other ball; maybe there is a lesson to be learnt here. Stephen won his semi-final 26 to 14.
The other semi-final was between Pam Gentle and Ron Johnstone, and would you believe Pam also pegged out her strikers ball, but in her next turn with a very long shot the ball hit the peg - magnificently done. Pam won her semi-final 26 to 13.
Now for the final; Stephen Howes got in and went around to rover using two of his bisques, Pam Gentle came on and made a long roquet but could not make it to hoop 1 as Stephen still had a ball on hoop 1 and two and a half bisques. Stephen finally pegged out with one hour and twenty minutes to spare, the final score being:
Stephen Howes 26 the winner and Pam Gentle 2 the runner up.
One of our referees, who shall remain nameless, had to get up early and in the dark on Monday, put her shirt on inside out, oh well that is something different.
Congratulations to Stephen Howes, he played great croquet, and also to Pam Gentle who played nicely.
Thanks to all the referees for their help in refereeing and also help with this report, thanks to the players for setting out and pulling up the hoops plus tidying up each day after the games.

Gold Singles, 29th April - 1st May 2005
The Gold Singles was held in perfect weather. There were some very good roquets made throughout the games, and one you don’t often see in croquet, they tell me it was an air swing - clever!
In block B we had one player who won 5 games and 5 players who won 2 games so that block was very close. In one of the semi finals between Larry Bryant and Tim Murphy, Tim made a break of 9 and set up a leave, Larry came on and made only 1 hoop, from then on it was Tim getting one or two hoops and Larry getting no hoops, eventually Tim got the red ball on to the peg with yellow on penault the score then being 21-1.
It’s Larry to play now and he took the blue ball around to one back and missed the hoop, Tim stayed on his same score, Larry played the black ball and got around to one back he then peeled the blue ball through one back and went on to rover with the black ball and, trying to beat the clock, he made a leave forgetting that Tim had a lift and contact, left the black ball with a rush to two back where his blue clip was, on comes Tim and he picks up the yellow ball took croquet and was able to peg out, the score being 26-18, it really was an "I can’t win" game, it could have gone either way.
The final between Ken Edwards and Tim Murphy was a very even game between the two players as you can see, the score being 17-16 with Ken being the winner and Tim the runner up. Congrats to Ken Edwards and also to Tim Murphy for an exciting game.
It was wonderful to see the players stay and watch the finals especially as there were country players staying also, we are sure the finalists appreciated it.
When games are played on days when the Concordia club is open we get a lot of interested people wanting to know about our game of croquet, we started with one man and ended up with about eight people asking what the players were doing all in one area.

Platinum Singles, 21st - 23rd May 2005
Twelve players contested the platinum singles played at HQ at Mackey Park from May 21-23. It was good to see a number of players from the country visiting the big smoke to play in the event.
Block A was dominated by Nick Chapman who easily won all 5 games completing one triple peel but failing in the other games after looking a good chance. Based on handicaps there were some surprise results in the other games which resulted in Pam Gentle being runner up in the block in her first competition at this level. Pam had 3 wins as did John Gilhooly but finished ahead of John on a net points count back. There were two games won by a point after time when the loser in each case had appeared to be in a winning position: one game was lost by playing a wrong ball after time. The runner up position in this block was determined by the last two games to be finished with both games finishing in the dark; Pam Gentle beat Ken Edwards and John Gilhooly lost to Ron Johnstone with Ron pegging out when players, balls and peg were no visible from the sideline.
Block B was more evenly contested with Chris Wilson winning the block with 5 wins. John Ballantyne and Michael Bidencope both had 3 wins with John being the runner up on a net points countback. Stewart Johnston playing in his first competition at this level performed well and could have been runner up if he had won his last game well.
The semi finals were won fairly easily. Nick Chapman beat John Ballantyne 26-9, although John did have his chances. A 40 cm missed roquet at 2 back whilst making a good break proved very costly for John. Chris Wilson beat Pam Gentle 26-5 when Pam seemed to find the hoops getting narrower than the balls.
The final was an all Canberra affair with Nick Chapman playing Chris Wilson. In an interesting and seesawing game both players had chances and broke down for various reasons or missed shots they would normally get. Chris appeared to be heading for possible victory with a clip on 4 back and a short hoop approach to 3 back (with Nick on peg and 3) but an over rolled hoop approach ruined it, as Nick hit the lift and finished the game in that turn for a 26-27 win.
Generally attacking croquet was played with 26 of the 33 games being pegged out.
Although there were some cold mornings with the early starts the weather was perfect throughout the event and the players and spectators enjoyed good croquet.

NSW State Handicap - Beryl Chambers Memorial Trophy, 10th - 13th June 2005
The final series of the Beryl Chambers Memorial Trophy (the NSW Handicap Championships) were held at Mackey Park, Tempe on June 10th - 13th. There were thirteen block winners from the following clubs:- Bundanoon, Canberra, Killara, Lismore, Maitland, Manly, Miller, Narooma, Orange, Park, Sydney, Tamworth, Wagga and Woollongong.
Because of the greater number of entrants from country areas there were ten country players and only three from the metropolitan area.
Competitors’ handicaps ranged from 0.5 to 18 and this meant that the bisque sticks were often referred to as a forest. Having made the finals it was obvious that players on the higher handicaps had learnt how to use their bisques to good advantage.
The games were all played in a good spirit and the standard was high with all players using forward play to good effect. The general comment from competitors was that this had been a great tournament and that they had learnt a huge amount. Those players who were relatively new to competition were surprised and grateful for the advice and encouragement given by the better players.
The competition was played in two round robin blocks with the winner and runner up progressing to play on Monday.
Block A was won by Barbara Bidencope of Tamworth, runner-up Peter Lloyd of Wagga Wagga.
Block B was won by John Harris of Canberra, runner-up Graham Scott of Wollongong.
The overall winner was Barbara Bidencope, runner-up John Harris.
Thanks must go to Margot Johnston and her team of referees and to the members of Hurstville Croquet Club for the catering.
Congratulations to all players throughout the state who entered in the competition this year. I am sure that next year’s event will be bigger and better. If the entry statistics remain the same Croquet NSW will need to seriously consider holding the final series in a country region.

Champion of Champions, 18th - 19th and 25th - 26th June 2005
The Champion of Champions Tournament was held at Tempe on the weekends 18th - 19th and 25th - 26th June. There were fourteen clubs represented, seven metropolitan and seven country. Competitors were divided into two blocks with most playing five games on the first weekend. The second Saturday saw the last round and the quarter finals with the semi finals and finals on the Sunday. The first weekend was chilly to say the least and the second was wet.
The first day was "giant killer" day with all four seeds being beaten by Tim Murphy and Geof McDonald. This meant that the final round created much interest as this determined who were the quarter finalists. Only three triple peels were scored in the block rounds - Peter Landrebe (2) and Chloe Aberley (1). Of the 48 games 40 were won by pegging out. Tim went to time in all six of his games. It was pleasing to see that every competitor won at least one game.
Thanks are due to:-

NSW Championships - Womens Open Singles, 9th - 12th July 2005
There were only 7 entries in this event.
A first time entrant in this event - Barbara Bidencope - has acquitted herself very well. Congratulations Barbara.
Good breaks have been made by all the players.
The closing minutes of the last match on Saturday between Pam Gentle and Nerida Taylor was played in virtual darkness with Pam winning 26 - 14.
Conditions on Sunday were atrocious - extremely cold, windy and raining. All players held up well under these conditions.
The competition was completed on Monday 11 July with Lorraine Le Blang winning and Christine Pont the runner up.

Kylie Scotter, 16th - 17th July 2005
The Kylie Scotter weekend competition was a great success. The players enjoyed their games and played in a friendly pleasant manner and I congratulate all.
I feel the standard of play was good and was pleased to see more forward play this year.
I would like to thank all who helped with refereeing. Very unselfish of you all.
Also thanks to the girls who made delicious soup and other goodies served from the kitchen.
My thanks to Peg for running the tournament while I was away and her help during the tournament.
Brian Smith was the winner with Glynn Gill runner up. Congrats to you both.
Thank you all for entering the Kylie Scotter and best wishes for the future.
NSW Championships - Mens Open Singles, 16th - 19th July 2005
The Men’s Open Singles Championship was held at Tempe on 16 - 19 July. There were fourteen competitors - four from metropolitan clubs, nine from country clubs and one interstate. Robert Fenwick Elliott is a member of Norwood S.A. and was made very welcome. He makes and sells mallets and the best way to describe them would be "elegant".
Play was conducted in two blocks of seven and most games were fiercely fought. After the second day only two players were undefeated - Nick Chapman and Geof McDonald. As usual it was the final round that determined who would progress to the semi finals. In Block A John Ballantyne and Nick Macoun were both on three wins and it was the winner who would progress. In Block B Geof needed a win in the final round to progress further but Robert Fenwick Elliott put a stop to that when he ran a magnificent break of eleven and pegged out for his second win of the tournament. His other win was against Tony hall and with a handicap of six he gained thirty-seven index points for those two games. Needless to say Geof and Tony were not really overjoyed.

Pennants Finals, 26th July - 4th August 2005
Thanks to the teams who arrived early and assisted with the set up of the lawns. Also many thanks to Margot Johnson and Josephine McGrath who OFFERED to referee for the 5 days of the finals - No! I didn’t twist their arms - and also to Pam Gentle and Robin Potter who also gave of their time to referee during these 5 days.
Overall players enjoyed the matches especially those who hadn’t played at Tempe before and expressed interest in returning next year.

NSW Championships - Open Doubles, 20th - 22th August 2005
The NSW Open Championships commenced on Saturday 20th August with the Doubles played over three days. Nine pairs were involved and most games were closely fought tussles going to time. The winners were Geof McDonald and John Levick from National Park (a surprise to many but not to them) with Nick Chapman and Peter Landrebe runners up. The barbecue held at the completion was a very pleasant affair.

NSW Championships - Open Singles, 23th - 28th August 2005
The Open Singles commenced on Tuesday 23rd August with one block of eight and one of nine to be played at Tempe and Chatswood. There was one late withdrawal but I was unaware of this until arriving at Tempe Tuesday morning to see a revised draw on the table. This left two blocks of eight to play over three days.
In the Round Robin the winner of Block A was Tony Hall (6 wins) and the winner of Block B was Tim Murphy (undefeated). The top four from each block progressed to the Quarter Finals at Tempe and the remainder played in the Plate at Chatswood. Two withdrew leaving a Round Robin of six played over two days.
The players agreed that the Quarter Finals and onward were to be played as the best of three untimed games. After one Quarter Final went to the third game it was decided that any third game commencing after 2.30pm would be limited to two and a half hours. It was interesting to hear the positive comments from all competitors regarding untimed games. Tony finished all his matches before 10.45am!
The final results were as follows:-
Open Singles - winner Tony Hall, runner up Tim Murphy
Y Event - winner Geof McDonald, runner up Pam Gentle
Plate - winner John Eddes, runner up John Levick
Congratulations to the winners
In both events there was a preponderance of players from country areas – twelve out of eighteen in the doubles and twelve out of sixteen in the singles. In future Open events all play should commence at 8.00am each day. This means that players do not have to commute during the peak periods. To alleviate travelling for country members at the end of the competition three rounds should be played each day. One or two rounds on the last day would make life easier for those who have to travel.
Events at the Concordia Club on both Sundays certainly made competitors concentrate on their croquet. The first Sunday there was a fair and the not so quiet oompah band and on the second a Tongan wedding. On both days there were numbers of children playing on and around the lawns. It is hoped that no child is ever hit with a ball.
At the end of the tournament there were a few changes of handicap:-
John Eddes 0 to 0.5
John Ballantyne 1.5 to 1
Pam Gentle 3.5 to 3
Tim Murphy 4 to 2.5 !!!!! He gained 128 Index Points!!

Bronze Brooch, 10th - 12th September 2005
Sydney Region (8th - 12th August)
This competition began with 8 players and unfortunately there were two withdrawals - one before the competition and one during the competition.
The players were all very willing to assist with the lawns - before and after the matches.
There were some nice breaks made by some of the players as well as some very nice long roquets.
All players were very enthusiastic about their games and willing to learn and ask questions at the end of play.
Thanks to Margot and her willing band of referees for giving up their valuable time.
Outstanding play was by Alan Walsh with breaks of 9 and 10 and pegged out.
The winners were Alan Walsh and Patricia Goldrick.

Bronze Handicap Singles, 19th - 23rd September 2005
This event was held at Tempe from 19 - 22 September, 2005 with 8 players and it was the first competition for 3 of these players - some of whom have only being playing for approximately six months. I admire their courage!! The players I spoke to said they really enjoyed the competition and are keen to compete again.
I would urge all clubs - when they have a member playing in their first CNSW event to point out to them: Conditions of play (as shown in Regulations for Tournaments) Dress Regulations (predominantly white or club colours) time for playing (45 seconds) and court courtesy. Some of the players were not aware of some of these conditions especially the dress regulations. With the assistance of the Referees the players went away from the competition much wiser.
These Bronze players are improving all the time. Handicap are coming down!! Watch out Silver players.
All players played very well but from observation I felt that Russell Megarrity (Milton Ulladulla) was the most improved during the competition. Congratulations Russell.
Pat Nosworthy from Chatswood was the winner and Ted Griffin from Cammeray was the runnerup.
Thanks to all referees and all who assisted with running of this competition.

Eva Short Memorial Womens Trophy, 29th October - 1st November 2005
During the Eva Short Memorial event there were some very close games with just over 50% of the games being pegged out and Rosemary Graham having one triple peel.
Carol O'Dell, Alison Sharpe and Alix Verge played very well, especially as Alison and Alix were first time players in the Eva Short event.
The standard of play was excellent, there were two players finished with 7 games won, one player with 6 games and four with 5 games won, well done to all players especially after the second day which never stopped raining and then court one decided it needed the sprinklers on during a game.
Congratulations to the winner Lorraine Le Blang, and the runner up Robyn Stock.

Selectors 10, 11th - 13th November 2005
Report for the Selectors 10 invitation event held 11, 12 & 13 November 2005, this is the last for the year, we hope to see all of you plus more people next year at Tempe.
Tim Murphy just missed a tp which was bad luck, as his peel through penult was a fantastic shot plus his strikers ball went to 3 back, his next hoop, then he broke down on 4 back but the good news was he won the game.
Welcome to Bill Blaikie from Taree, Bill plays in country tournament, this was his first tournament at Tempe, he had a nail biting finish in his game against Nick Macoun, with both balls on the peg he missed his peg out, Nick comes on he has one ball on the peg and one ball on 3 back, Nick gets to penult and breaks down, with time ticking away, on comes Bill and pegs the blue ball out, Nick then goes through penult, rover and with a long peg out wins the game 26 to 25.
Many thanks to all players for setting and pulling up the lawns, also thanks to Margot, Carol O’Dell, Dennis Faggotter and Geof McDonald who were to referee when called.
Congratulations to all players for a wonderful tournament and special congrats to the Winner Tim Murphy with 8 wins and runner up Nick Macoun with 7 wins.
Merry Christmas and a Happy new year to all and good bye till next year.
