DETAILED RESULTS 2007

3 and Under Singles, 3rd - 4th February 2007

The -3 to 3 is the first competition set down for the NSW calendar and was held on the 3rd and 4th February. It is my understanding that it has been scheduled at this time to provide the State team with match practice in their lead up to the Eire Cup but only three state team members were involved. There were twelve competitors, four from the metropolitan area and eight from country regions. Handicaps ranged from -0.5 to 3 so the standard was high and the competition fierce.

Players were divided into two blocks and games were limited to 2 ¼ hours. Only two triple peels were scored in the block rounds but there were three more on the final day. Triple peels were scored by Chloe Aberley (2), Brett Rogers, Nick Macoun and Tony Hall. It was pleasing to see that everyone had at least one win in the block rounds. Nick Macoun was undefeated in his block but the other was very close with three people on three wins and the winner and runner up being decided on net points.

In the semifinals Brett Rogers defeated Stephen Richards 26 - 0 and Nick Macoun defeated Dick Smith 26TP - 0. In the final Brett defeated Nick 26 -2. It is great to see both Brett and Nick playing so well.

Players did express their disappointment with the lawns. They looked good but there was a lot of weed and residue from the top dressing.

Thank you to all players for their assistance

State Team Challenge, 17 February 2007

The NSW State Team and a "challenge" team comprising Pam Gentle, Tony Hall, Alan Honey, John Levick, Brett Rogers, Dick Smith, Nerida Taylor and Alix Verge played a match replicating a competition day of Eire Cup play (2 x men's and women's doubles, 8 x men's singles and women's singles, with each team member playing 3 matches throughout the day). The match was played at Tempe on 17 February as part of the State team's preparations for the Eire Cup in Perth at the end of March. The State team recorded an 18-2 victory and all players benefited from the simulated match play.

On behalf of the State team I'd like to extend my thanks to all "challenge" team members for taking part in this event, and particularly to Nerida Taylor for her coordination of challenge team playing arrangements. I would also like to thank the CNSW for endorsing the concept and those spectators who turned up to watch some of the play.

The State team's Eire Cup preparations will continue over the next 5-6 weeks with individual practice/training programs over this period and further match play at Tempe on 3-4 March.

Gold Doubles, 20th - 22nd February 2007

The Gold Doubles was played in very hot and humid weather, even so the players enjoyed their games.

Martyn Prins made a break of 12 and Janelle Wood made a break of 9. Unfortunately there was only one peg out made by Mike Hughes and Ted Griffin against Stewart Johnston and Vic Aberley.

We only had 4 teams for this tournaments, 3 men and one women's team, so please ladies come forward next year and help the women's team to win. Fay Stove and Janelle Word would be happy to see you. We could also do with more men playing.

There are a lot of Croquet Clubs around Sydney area, surly we can see more players coming to Tempe.

The lawns are very good and you can meet up with old friends.

Thanks to the players for help to set the lawns up and putting away after the games leaving everything tidy.

Thanks also to the referee who was kept busy the whole time.

Congratulations to the Winners Stewart Johnson and Vic Aberley.

Runners Up were Mike Hughes and Ted Griffin.

5 and Under Doubles, 10th - 11th March 2007

The 5 and Under Doubles was introduced last year with the specific purpose of providing the State Team with practice in doubles. This was certainly effective this year with the two teams who played being new doubles pairings. Both pairs found the weekend most useful and the comment from competitors was that the standard of all games was high.

There were only seven entries which was a bit disappointing. Four rounds were played on the Saturday and this made it a long day with the last game finishing after 7.00pm. Of the 21 games played 13 were pegged out, 2 with a triple peel (Peter Landrebe). The 8 games which went to time were all very tight, five finishing with a difference of only 1 or 2.

The lawns were in good condition with an excellent covering of grass.

The final positions were sorted out only in the last round and were as follows:

1st with 5 wins - Peter Landrebe and Mike Jenner
2nd with 4 wins - Nick Macoun and Dick Smith
3rd with 4 wins - Alison Sharpe and Robbie Stock
4th with 4 wins - Geof McDonald and Ian Bailey
5th with 2 wins - Alix Verge and Mark Callan
6th with 2 wins - Christine Pont and Max Wiltshire
7th with 0 wins - Pam Gentle and Stephen Howes

Thank you to John Eddes for refereeing and for staying to the bitter end on Saturday and to all the players for their cooperation and the professional manner in which all games were played.

Senior Citizens Week, 12th - 16th March 2007

There were only 7 clubs represented in this event. Come on clubs - get your players motivated to enter CNSW events!

This was a handicap event with a base handicap of 5 so there were lots of bisques to be had by most players. Some of these were used wisely especially by Mike Hughes who used only 1½ to defeat Tony Hall 26-0. But I must say a lot of bisques were wasted. The event was played in a friendly and sportsmanlike manner by all competitors.

Thanks to Marie Waterman, the Tournament Referee, and the Referees who gave of their time to officiate at this event. Ros Johnstone and Mike Hughes won 5 of their 6 matches with Mike eventually winning the event and Ros was the Runnerup.

Fransted Trophy, 5th - 9th April 2007

The Fransted Cup was played over the Easter weekend at Tempe in 2 blocks of 6. Play was ordinary handicap, with the top 4 in each block going through to the quarter-finals.

In the Final Lesley quickly burned up 4 of her 7 bisques to run 2 hoops - but then got into her swing and made the score 11-0. Then Martyn hit in and ran a 12, but gave control back to Lesley. With more than an hour to go the game had turned into an arm wrestle, with only incremental progress. Just seconds before time, Martyn ran onto the lawn to hit his black ball - jawsed in penult - down to the southern boundary to somewhere near his blue ball in corner 4. Because of his haste he hit the inside LEFT leg of penult which deflected the black ball to corner 1 instead! Not a very promising close join, with the score at 16-15 to him and the bell about to go in Lesley’s next turn.

Lesley then played carefully to run both 4-back and penult in her last turn.

The score was now 17-16 to her and Martyn’s only choice was to fire from corner 4 to his black in corner 1. He swung - and hit. From there, a take-off to hoop 2 to pick up her two balls and then an undemanding rush to 5 would have given him the win. He swung - and missed - from 2 yards!

So 17-16 to Lesley Fransen.

The scores in the Quarter & Semi Finals were not all 1-0. The winners were provided but no scores.

NSW Golf Croquet Championship - Open Doubles, 14th - 15th April 2007

The field was much stronger than last year and there were more players competing. In fact there were sixteen teams divided into two round robins and the standard of play was very good.

The boys from Maitland John Compton and Peter Smith were the surprise packet of the tournament and proved a real handful for all the other teams. In their semi final against Tony Hall and John Eddes it was closely fought and took three games to decide the outcome with Tony and John prevailing. Meanwhile Robyn Wallace and Jo McGrath also had a great tournament. In the semi-final Robyn ran hoops from just about everywhere in the first game and fortunately for John Levick and myself couldn't keep it up and we ran out winners in three very close games.

In the final Tony and John had a relatively easy win they were as they say "too good for us on the day" against John Levick and myself winning in two straight games. But beware next year.

The competition was fierce, the camaraderie was great and we all swore to be back again next year. Let's hope with greater numbers.

Silver Singles, 30th April - 4th May 2007

The Silver Singles competition was held from Monday 30th April - Friday 4th May. There were nine entries mainly from the Metropolitan area. It was pleasing to see a few new faces - welcome to the fun.

I would have to say that the standard of play was patchy. We all had at least one game that we were pleased with. Conversely we all stomped off the lawn at some stage muttering about the parentage of the balls and the state of the lawns. But it wasn’t the balls or the lawns - it was us. The Silver Division is difficult. We all know what we should do but all too often the execution does not live up to our expectations. Players in the top divisions probably have Plan A and maybe Plan B. Me I get to Plan X!! The final result was not known until time was called on the last game.

Jacky McDonald and Ron Humpherson both had one loss and Jacky scraped in by five hoops.

Thank you to Rita, Margot and John for managing the tournament and to the referees for their patience.

Gold Singles, 8th - 12th May 2007

The Gold Singles was held at our HQ Lawns from May 8 to May 12 with a very strong field of 9 players, 7 of whom were on a handicap of 5.

Due to the quality of the players there was a lot of good croquet played with substantial breaks being done regularly by most players. 26 of the 36 games were pegged out with only one winning score being less than 21.

Mark Callan played the most consistent croquet to be undefeated in 8 games to win the event. Martyn Prins was runner up with 7 wins, losing only to Mark 22-21 so the vent was effectively decided by only one point. John Harris finished third with 6 wins. Mark almost completed a straight double peel just failing by a whisker to peg out the croqueted ball.

Many of the players displayed form which will ensure their handicap will continue to decrease. The three place getters all moved to 4.5 and therefore into Platinum Division - congratulations to these players.

Platinum Singles, 18th - 20th May 2007

The portents for this event were initially not favourable - 2 redraws were necessary as numbers changed, 2 players arrived late on day 1 due to Sydney’s fickle traffic and the weather on day 1 started off very wet and windy. Fortunately the weather improved late on day 1 and remained good throughout the rest of the tournament.

The croquet played was of a good standard throughout with long breaks being the norm in most games, with 26 of the 30 games in the block rounds being pegged out. Only a few games produced a close finish. Chris Wilson completed a break of 13 after time was called to win by 3 against Peter Richardson, Martyn Prins eventually won 26-22 against Nick Macoun after leading 21-1 and 24-11 when the game had to be pegged down due to darkness. Chris also provided some excitement in the quarter final drawing level with Nick Macoun after time was called and scoring a "golden point" in extra time to win. Ken Edwards had a chance to beat Alison Sharpe in the quarter final needing to score two points to draw level after time had been called. The first point was easy- Ken had taken position right in front of three back and knowing Ken’s roll shots who would back against him rolling to four back? He rolled from three back to four back but missed the hoop shot to lose by one.

A number of players were new to this division and two preformed very well. Martyn Prins was undefeated in the block round only to lose the quarterfinal to Ian Bailey. Peter Richardson won 4 of the 5 block matches but lost his quarterfinal to Alan Honey.

As is often the case, the semi finals and the final were not of the same high standard as the earlier matches with errors being made more frequently. Chris Wilson beat Alison Sharpe 25-24 in a see sawing match which the spectators had given to each play several times only for something to go wrong. Ian Bailey beat Alan Honey in the other semi file 26-16.

Ian Bailey beat Chris Wilson in the final 26-12. Congratulations to these players for their success. Congratulations to all the other players for their fine play, acceptance of the conditions on day 1, and being there early to set up the lawns - particularly for the pegged down game starting at 7:30 am on day 2.

NSW State Handicap - Beryl Chambers Memorial Trophy, 8th - 12th June 2007

The final of this state wide event was held over the long weekend 8th to 11th June at the HQ lawns at Tempe. This was the culmination of over 180 matches played by 70 players in regional blocks throughout NSW during April and May. Players were from clubs as far north as Forster, south to Narooma, west to Wagga Wagga and Sydney clubs.

12 players won the right to play in the final series but there was one late withdrawal leaving 11 to play in the finals. Most people will remember the weather on this long weekend - it was appalling for 2 days, terrible for one and finally just OK on the last day. But croquet players are resilient and all went out and did battle on the lawns despite the adverse conditions.

The handicap range of the finalists was not as great as other years so there were no ‘picket fences’ this year for low markers to contend with and high markers to exploit but in some matches there were up to 7 bisques. Often these proved the most interesting games with the high marker going all out to get as many hoops as possible with their bisques and then the low marker trying to catch up. Richard Meacock (Canberra) had two of these matches in a row, being 23 to 0 behind John Coates (Forster) before winning and then being 23 to 2 behind Neil Hardie (Cammeray) in the semi final but unable to repeat the previous performance. The standard of play was good, not withstanding the conditions, and there were a number of long breaks both using and not using bisques. Barbara Bidencope (Tamworth) made a break of 12 without bisques and Richard Meacock made several long breaks.

Block A was won by David Moody (Sutherland) with only one loss, and Margaret Sawers (Nowra) finishing second.

Block B was won by Barbara McTiernan (Forster) winning all games with Richard Meacock finishing second.

Four players from each block went into the quarter finals with the winners being Barbara McTiernan over John Read (Orange), Richard Meacock over John Coates, Margaret Sawers over Barbara Bidencope and Neil Hardie over David Moody by 1 point.

The semi finals saw Neil Hardie beat Richard Meacock 26 - 4 and Barbara McTiernan beat Margaret Sawers 26 - 17.

So the final was between Neil Hardie who just scraped into the quarter finals in fourth place in his block and Barbara McTiernan who was still undefeated.. The final started typically of many finals - many innings and just as many break downs with the scores advancing very slowly. But then both players settled down and good play with breaks ensued with the advantage see sawing back and forth. Barbara got one ball to rover then playing the second ball stuck in hoop 4 with the lawn perfectly laid out and with Neil’s ball nearby which was also for hoop 4 - so Neil also got one ball around to penultimate. Barbara then got the second ball to peg, but Neil hit in with the backward ball and was playing nicely with the lawn laid out to peg out Barbara’s peg ball when he stuck in rover with Barbara’s rover ball alongside. Barbara finished the game to win 26 - 21. An interesting final had seen a worthy undefeated winner, more meritorious considering Barbara has not been playing competitive association croquet for very long and played off a handicap of 9.

Congratulations to Barbara and Neil and thanks to the other players who braved the trying conditions without complaint. Thanks also to all the players who entered the regional block play offs, to Margot Johnson for being the tournament referee, to Mary Fernance who did the much appreciated catering and to Wall Fernance who did a lot of work setting up the lawns.

NSW Championships - Mens Open Singles, 13th - 16th July 2007

The Mens Open Singles was held from 13th - 16th July. There was a strong field of 16 divided into two blocks playing at Killara and Tempe for the first two days. With only the one round left to play both blocks played at Tempe on the Sunday prior to the Semi Finals. The semi finals and final were played as the best of three.

Congratulations to Mark Callan and Peter Richardson whose handicaps have reduced

Competition was close and the semi finalists in both blocks were not confirmed until the final round. The finalists were as follows:-

Block A - Peter Landrebe (6 wins) and Nick Macoun (5 wins)
Block B - Dick Smith (7 wins) and Stephen Richards (5 wins)

Peter defeated Stephen in two games but had to wait for Dick and Nick to play a third game on Monday morning before needing three games to defeat Nick Macoun. Well played to all competitiors.

Thank you to Killara for the use of their lawns for the two days

NSW Championships - Open Doubles, 18th - 20th August 2007

Eight pairs contested the Open Doubles Championship held over August 18 to 20. The weather started miserably and only got worse such that Sunday was played in appalling rain, wind and cold.

There were several close and interesting games despite the conditions with four pairs still in the running for the final going into the last round of block matches with the top two positions determined in the last match to finish.

The block finished with Peter Landrebe and Rosemary Graham first, Alison Sharpe and Nerida Taylor second, Stephen Richards and John Eddes third, Dick Smith and Robbie Stock fourth.

The final between Peter/Rosemary and Alison/Nerida was a typical final with only two significant breaks and much cat and mouse tactics. The final score was 19 -10 in favour of Peter & Rosemary.

Golf Croquet Pennants, Finals 3rd August 2007

The Golf Croquet Pennants have been finalized and for a first effort I think it was most successful. There were 4 teams in Division 1(handicap 0 - 5) and 14 in Division 2 (handicap 6 - 10). It was obvious in some contests that competitors handicaps were not as they should be but hopefully with more singles play that problem will eventually sort itself out.

The Division 1 competition was won by National Park. This division was rather tardy in providing results so I am not sure at the moment who was the runner up.

The Division 2 was divided into four groups and the Group winners were, Epping, Sutherland B, Nowra and Maitland. These teams played the semi finals and finals at Tempe on Friday 3rd August. The final was played between Maitland and Nowra and was a very close tussle. Both teams won one singles match so the doubles game was the decider. This was a long match and went to the third game, finally won by the Maitland team 5 - 4.

Congratulations to National Park and Maitland!!

Thanks are due to all the teams - by all accounts they enjoyed the experience. A special thanks must go to Bev Smith of Maitland who filled in for Epping in the semi finals when one of their team had a fall the day before and was unable to play.

Looking forward to a bigger and better competition next year.

Gold Brooch, 21st - 22nd September 2007

The final of the Gold Brooch was played on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 September between the representatives from the Sydney and Canberra regional playoffs.

Alan Walsh won the event undefeated with 5 wins conceding only 15 points in the 5 games.

Jim Nicholls from Wagga Wagga was runner-up with 4 wins.

The standard of croquet was very high with only 3 games not pegging out and most players completing long breaks.

Selector's 10, 5th - 7th October 2007

The Selector’s 10 competition was introduced two years ago to give the selectors an opportunity to see those players who were reaching the standard where they could be competing for places in the NSW State teams. One of the conditions of entry is that the winner of this competition will play in the Bronze Medal. In the past two years the standard of players in this competition has increased markedly and this year was no exception.

Whilst there were no triple peels several were attempted. It was pleasing to see that all competitors won at least one game. Most games were very close with the end result not clear until close to the end.

Nick Macoun, who is chairman of the Selection Committee was playing over the weekend and another selector, Alix Verge was here on the Sunday.

Congratulations to Dick Smith who won with eight wins seven of which he pegged out. The runner up was Ken Edwards with seven wins. I was most surprised to hear at the end of the competition that Dick was not available to play in the Bronze Medal.

Thank you to all the competitors for the way in which they played their games. We did not have any referees and the players refereed themselves.

Silver Handicap Singles, 8th - 10th October 2007

6 players took part in this event which was played in a very friendly and sportsmanlike manner. All players won at least 1 game each with David Moody and Jacky McDonald winning 4 games each. The result was not decided until the last session of the day with Jacky winning her last match and David losing his last match.

All players agreed it was a very enjoyable competition.

Congratulations to the winner - Jacky McDonald and the runnerup - David Moody.

Eva Short Memorial Trophy, 12th - 14th October 2007

This invitation competition had 7 non-acceptances, withdrawals or injuries before starting and I would very much like to thank all players for playing so competitively and in such an outstanding spirit. There were some excellent games and results overall mirror the handicaps standards very closely.

Congratulations to Alison Sharpe who was the undefeated stand-out and her swing and concentration was admired.

Christine Pont pushed all the way and was a very worthy runner-up.

Special mention to Jean Pack for good solid play.

Many thanks to Rita as manager and Mary as tournament referee who worked well to make for extremely smooth and happy croquet.

A.C.A. Bronze Medal, 19th - 21st October 2007

The NSW Bronze Medal was held at Tempe on 19th - 21st October. Ten players were invited by the selectors to compete. This is the last major competition to be held this year and it was fitting that this comprised the top players in New South Wales. Due to the continuing dry weather the lawns were fast and the hoops tight making for testing conditions for all. Competitors were from Canberra, Wollongong, Cammeray, Blue Mountains, Bathurst, National Park and Killara.

This was held as a round robin tournament with untimed games which meant three games each day. With the games being untimed there were late finishes each day with one game pegged down on the Saturday and completed before the start of play on Sunday. Because there were no referees available the players refereed their own games and this did not present any problems.

The final positions were not decided until the completion of the last game and they were as follows:-

1.Peter Landrebe Cammeray9 wins, 2 Triple Peels
2.Stephen RichardsCanberra6 wins
3.Tim Murphy Canberra6 wins
4.Tony HallCanberra6 wins
5.Rosemary GrahamBlue Mountains6 wins

Congratulations to Peter. He will now represent New South Wales in the Gold Medal to be held at the Australian Championships to be held in Brisbane next March.

NSW Schools Championships, 29th - 30th November 2007

The second annual Schools Championship was held at Tempe on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th November. There were twenty three competitors overall from seven schools both country and metropolitan. It was good to see large contingents from Blackheath Public School and Cowra High.

The Primary Division was completed on Thursday. Ten competitors in two blocks of five played Golf Croquet on half lawns. In the semi finals Aubrey Swivel (Blackheath) defeated Christian Hawthorne (Neutral Bay) 7-3 and Max Boddington (MosmanPrep) defeated Zindze Speede( (Blackheath) 7-0. The final was a very close game with the lead changing several times until Aubrey emerged the winner beating Max 7-6.

The Secondary Division was played over the two days and spectators and players all commented on the improvement in tactics and level of play on the second day. There were two blocks of six and seven and once again it was Golf Croquet that was played. In the Semi Finals Hannah Carrol Harris (Mosman) defeated Jacqui Dircks (Calrossy) 7-6 and Reece Keogh (Gunnedah) defeated Bradley Christie (Mosman) 7-0. In the Final Reece defeated Hannah 7-2. Reece has now been the winner for two years – not bad for a Year 8 student. He certainly displays the potential to go further.

All competitors were advised that they were to wear school sports uniform or predominantly white. While I realize that Mosman High does not have a school uniform it was disappointing that their students made no effort to conform.

These events could not take place without a lot of help and my sincere thanks go to Wendy Fothergill, Bill Haines, Mary Gibson, Geof McDonald, Glenn Johnson and the parent (and grandparent) supporters.
